The Kit's Crater Five encounter the Magician at the annual Kit's Crater Grange Fair, draw cards from the Tarot of True Fate, and are first imbued with the seeds of growing spellcasting potential. The Magician informs the Five of their fates (as determined by their drawn cards) and states that the world will end in fire on the last day of the current year. The Magician then disappears when his tent "burns down" - except that no other fair-goers (other than a few other first-born children) remember the magician or his tent being anything other than a staff preparation area.
