Shards

Green to get you through the day.
Amber to drink your cares away.
Blue to purchase something nice.
Red'll pay for any vice.
— Cieran Rhyme

Manufacturing process

The exact manufacturing process of shards is a closely guarded secret. Even those who are involved in one of the three mints aren't usually aware of the full method. All shards seem to be coated in some sort of resin that ensure they don't shatter

Significance

Shards serve as the primary currency of the Kingdoms, being produced by the mints of Pantopolis, Hearth, and Roux Rochelle.
Shards are divided into five categories, each a different shape and color.

Green shards affectionately referred to as "Iron pieces" or "Jade pieces" are worth 1 shard. They're a small, circular disk made of deep green, slightly opaque glass. The symbol of the mint that minted them is in the dead center of the circle. It is unknown as to whether or not iron is actually added to the glass to give it this specific color. 1 shard is approximately enough to buy a meal at a low to moderate quality inn, a few eggs, or a kilogram of rye or wheat flour.

Amber shards, "Embers", "Cinders", or "Amber pieces" are known for their reddish amber color and are worth 5 shards. They consist of a small, long rectangle about five centimeters long and two centimeters wide. Their mint sigil is cast in the center of the bar. 5 shards are approximately enough money to buy a nice meal at a nice tavern, a bottle of ale, a steak, or a kilogram of most types of fruit, though this varies from location to location.

Clear shards, "Crystals" or "Quartz pieces" are known for being completely transparent and posses a value of 10 shards. They consist of a long, triangular piece of glass. The mint sigil is stamped in the dead center of the base of the triangle. 10 shards will typically buy a kilogram of butter, fresh pork, or honey. It's also the average pay for days worth of unskilled labor in the capital, or an entry-level enlisted man.

Blues shards, known as "Cobalts", "Cobbs" or "Sapphire pieces" are a very deep, vibrant blue color and are worth 25 shards. They consist of a square piece of glass, 3cm by 3cm with the mint emblem located in the center. 25 shards will purchase a pair of cheap shoes, a lantern, several pairs of socks, two shirts, or a square meter of wool fabric.

Red shards, known as "Reds" or "Ruby pieces" are a deep, regal red color. They are the most valuable of the coins, being worth 100 shards. They're shaped like a small pentagon, with the mint emblem stamped in the center. 100 shards will purchase a bottle of fine wine, a pair of heavy boots, or a single shot, breach loaded rifle.
