Harvest Festival

Every year in autumn, the inhabitants of Keider celebrate the harvest in honour of the Divine Queen, goddess of agriculture, motherhood and fertility. The festival is one of the most important religious celebrations of the entire year, since a successful harvest festival is considered to be of paramount importance for a good harvest the following year. If anything goes wrong during the festival, it is possible that the Divine Queen will be unhappy and cause a bad harvest or some personal tragedy the next year.

During the formal, religious part celebrations, people come together and a small portion of one's harvest is given as an offering to the Divine Queen, either in a temple or at an altar in one's own home, and people pray for good harvest and the Divine Queen's blessing for their families, particularly for the women and children. After the official part it is customary to have a large feast in the community with food, drinks, music and dancing, or to at least share a meal with one's family if one can afford to. Most celebrate with their families, neighbours or villages.

One item of food is found on every table during the harvest festival. It is known as harvest bread, even though it does not have much in common with regular bread. It is a sweet pie or pastry filled with fruit, usually apples or pears. It is usually made as a pie and sliced and shared with the whole table, but some prefer to make individual small pastries so each guest can have their own one.

Among the wealthy, harvest festival celebrations tend to turn out quite lavish and extravangant. As an example, the royal family of Keider traditionally hosts a banquet and ball in the Royal Palace to which anyone with a rank to their name is invited.

The royal harvest ball often is a masquerade and considered the biggest extravagance of the entire year in the city of Lenen, and arguably the entire kingdom. The guests all dress to impress.

Most important people are invited to it, making it a political event as much as a celebration. Many an alliance and treaty has been forged during a harvest ball.
