The company started with the reconstruction of a 2 arch viaduct that had collaped on the Highland Railway's main line. The earliest motive power used by the company was an Ex - Highland Railway 0-4-0ST (built by Neilson). The engine was rented until 1878 when it was purchased for M260, This engine became their № 1. 1880 saw the purchase of their № 4, a brand new Neilson & Company 0-6-0T aswell as some new goods wagons, replacing their old 2nd or 3rd hand stock purchased from other companies.
