ROD №s 491 - 502

ROD №s 491 - 502 were a group of 12 0-6-0 tank engines built by Hudswell, Clarke for use by the War Department. The order was placed for them in 1917 with all twelve arriving between March and October 1918, seeing little to no service on the front lines of World War 1. Only №s 491, 493 & 494 ever saw use in France.
They were a standard Hudswell, Clarke 0-6-0T design with sloped side - tanks and outside cylinders. The locomotives were intended for use as shunters at the various depots and ports on the western front but, with the war's end in November 1918, the majority of locomtovies never were shipped to the continent. When the war came to an end, the locomotives were first used to shunt the returning wagons and coaches to be sorted and then returned to their original company or sold elsewhere. Upon completion of this eight loocmotives were sold by the War Surplus & Disposals Board as they were no longer needed by the ROD, most went to collieries or other industrial sites with only two being in service on a light railway. By 1928, more powerful locomotives were owned by the Railway Operating Division so the rest were sold with three going to the Etorean National Railways as №s 50871 - 50873.
