NER 213 Class 0-4-0ST
The North Etorean Railway (NER) 213 Class 0-4-0ST was a class of eight 0-4-0ST type steam locomotive designed for light shunting. They all remained in service until 1912, when withdrawals began, the last on the mainline being withdrawn in 1959.
The first three members of the class were built by M. Brenner & Sons at their works in Whitfield, Eastonshire; they were ordered to supliment the inherited locomotives then in use by the NER as shunters, most of these engines being older tank engines of varying wheel arrangements. A further batch of five was constructed at the NER's Kilbourne Works. The first of the class were initially sent to Wellingborough & Parsley Sidings to replace three old "Bury Bar Frame" type 0-4-0s which had been the shunters there for the previous decade at least, with the engines they replaced dating from the late 1840s. The following five locomotives were focused on the larger yard at Winson on the outskirts of Knightsbury.
The class remained in service into Etorean National Railways ownership, doing the same job usually at the same site they were originally allocated to. All but one would be numbered into the ENR's stockbook, the exception being NER №73 which had been sold to the Chippingston Colliery in 1912. Under ENR ownership, some would be moved to different sites though they remained in what was NER territory. The first ENR withdrawals came in 1938 with №s 40167 & 40168 being withdrawn and scrapped, a further locomotive was sold during the Second World War to the Tennison Pottery Co. as "Wellingboro". The final locomotives under ENR ownership were withdrawn and scrapped between 1946 and 1959, though 40165 countinued to be used as a stationary boiler until 1961. №40169 survived until 1963, after which she was scrapped after being replaced by a diesel.
Ex - NER №73, now UCC OE Chippingston Colliery №4, was withdrawn from service in 1965 and sold to a scrap merchant in Overton, Carnclareshire. Fortunately, she was spared the cutter's torch after she was purchased by the Shipston Valley Railway Society Society in 1972 and taken to the Shipston Valley Light Railway where she was restored to operational condition in 1978. She now resides at the Chaldean Railway after being sold to the Mason Arms Locomotive Trust.
