GSRoE Class 385

The Great Southern Railway of Etorea Class 385 was a class of thirty two 0-6-0ST tank locomotives designed by Archibald Wickham for use on shunting duties at sites operated by the GSRoE.
The Class was designed in 1873 for short haul services. They had to be capable of running with a small goods train over a short distance and have a small enough wheelbase to navigate the tight corners at Straclone docks. In 1892s, the class had a 0 added to the front of their number as all thirty two were added to the duplicate list. The class saw active service for twenty one years before the first examples began to be withdrawn, №95 was sold to the Barcashel Granite Quarry in 1894 with the rest of the class having been sold or withdrawn for scrap by 1909. Three ended up on railways owned by Arthur Crawford, with seven surviving into use with the United Coke & Coal Board. No locomotives survived into ENR ownership but some locomotives did venture onto ENR metals through exchange sidings at collieries. One other (№177) was used by the Railway Operating Division on the Orton Hall Military Railway.
The last suriving locomotive was ex - №203 which was scrapped at UCC Broadwater in 1976, having been their №14 since 1901. One example has been preserved at the Tew Valley Preserved Railway in very poor condition, it is unlikely the locomotive will run again.
