Republic of Ireland

The Republic of Ireland is an island nation in Europe.

Culture

The Irish people began to further embrace the culture of their ancestors that had previously been repressed, including fighting to revive the Irish language.

History

Ireland had been fighting for home rule among the empire of Great Britain for centuries. In 1914, Ireland was granted home rule and became a dominion of the British Empire.

During the The Great War, Ireland supported the efforts of Britain and the allies, despite having sympathies for and from the German Empire. Following the British defeat in the war, Ireland was made to pay increased taxes to pay for the reparations, despite having their own parliament. Irish politicians gave the British government an ultimatum, to recognize the legitimacy of the Irish Parliament, or Ireland would seek an alliance with Germany, taking Prince Joachim as their king. King George V relented, and Ireland was made a co-equal member of the Anglo-Irish Empire.

In 1925, with the repression beginning in Canada against the people of Quebec, many Irish ministers saw parallels between their struggle for recognition and the Quebecois. In 1926, a resolution passed the Irish Parliament condemning the actions of the Canadian government. Meanwhile, in Britain, this resolution was seen as too sympathetic to the French culture of the Comintern Republic. During their audience with King George V, the Prime Ministers of Britain and Ireland got into a shouting match. After which, George V sided with Britain and did not give Royal Assent to the resolution.

In 1929, Irish Separatists won the majority of seats in the Parliament, making Republican Eadmond de Valera Prime Minister. Loyalty to the British crown was slowly stripped away with legislation, such as removal from oaths of office and enlistments. This angered the British Parliament, who urged George V to refuse Royal Assent. The situation came to a head in 1933, where Irish citizens clashed with British police forces, sparking the Irish War for Independence. The war lasted until 1936, with the ascension of King Edward VIII. Edward wished an end to the war, and agreed to Irish independence.

Ireland quickly worked to gain support from Germany, but when Great Britain began to build aircraft carriers, breaking the terms of the Great Treaty, Ireland joined in the condemnations. This was under the belief that a war with Germany would engulf Ireland as well. When the Anglo-German War, and later the World War, began, Ireland expressed their neutrality.
