Nordic Empire
The Nordic Empire, or Scandinavian Empire, is a large and powerful nation in northern Europe bordering the Russian Empire.
Structure
The Nordic Empire, or Scandinavian Empire or simply Scandinavia, is modeled off of the German Empire, consisting of Sweden, Norway, and Finland. Each consists of their own parliaments, currencies, militaries, and monarchs, all under the Swedish king as the Nordic Emperor. All of the governments form under Sweden in times of war. The capitals of the three states are Oslo, Norway, Stockholm, Sweden, and Helsinki, Finland, with the imperial capital being Kalmar, Sweden.
History
The Union of the three nations began to significantly shift during the reign of Oscar II. Norway began to press the issue of further autonomy, as Oscar II refused to recognize the Norwegian Constitution. Furthermore, issues in Finland began to face similar challenges, as Oscar viewed it as little more than a Swedish colony. Oscar, facing revolution on two fronts, appealed to the German Kaiser for advice. With Kaiser Wilhelm II arbitrating, the Finnish, Swedish, and Norwegian representatives came to a compromise. Sweden would adopt a constitution across all three nations, all three would be granted their own parliaments with representatives to a federal parliament, and Norway and Finland would elect their own monarchs as representatives. Sweden would gain control of federal finances, military matters, and foreign relations for all three, as well as gain the title of Nordic Emperor. Oscar II of Sweden began to protest the reforms, but with his death in 1907 and the ascension of Gustaf V, the empire endured.
Norway elected Prince Carl of Denmark as their king as Haakon VII, believing in doing so would bring Denmark closer to joining the empire as a counter to Sweden and Finland's respective pro-German and anti-Russian sentiments. Denmark had held anti-German sentiments since losing the Schleswig-Holstein War in 1864. Finland elected Prince Heinrich of Prussia. This was not supported among the greater imperial court, as many believed it would put too much German influence over the Nordic Empire.
During the The Great War, Scandinavia was torn between their friendly relations with Germany and their rivalry with Russia. Norwedgian politicians within the empire were opposed to war, Sweden was German allied, and Finland was against Russia. Eventually, Scandinavia declared neutrality, though they maintained trade with Germany. This continued during the Russo-German War, though both Sweden and Finland voted for war against Russia.
