They were simply numbers. Faceless names on a paper. They say they counted into the hundreds of thousands. I wouldn’t know. I didn’t care to keep track, especially as the war waged on. I simply processed the names, and notified who needed to know. The next of kin, the burial, the shipment, none of that was my responsibility. As they piled up, all I saw was a stack of papers. Were they ever human? I don’t believe I am anymore.
