AQL | Archdukedom of Saal

Saal is a large island that lies to the west of the Kingdom, across the The Ghost Sea, and to the north of Kirth. It’s a rocky, rainy island with poor soil and bitterly cold winters, saved from abject poverty only by generous iron deposits in its hills. The Saalish place great value on freedom and independence, and their laws are relatively lax. As a result they have attracted (perhaps unfairly) a reputation as a haven for brigands.

 

The Saalish have a proud maritime tradition, with a deeply ingrained cultural affinity for the open sea. As a result, they are a formidable naval power, and Saalish ships are some of the finest to ever sail. Coupled with their cultural affinity for freedom, and lax legal system, this also means the vast majority of pirate ships are of Saalish origin.

 

The Saalish are ruled (in the loosest sense of the word) by an Archduke, which is a hereditary position almost entirely identical to the title of Monarch. This fact won't stop the Saalish from proudly proclaiming that they aren't a Monarchy. The current ruler is Archduke Shomo the Magnificent, a large and genial man in his 50s who has been in power for decades. There are many legends of both his generosity and his cut-throat ruthlessness. The independently-minded Saalish pay little mind to their Archduke, however, and most laws are infrequently and half-heartedly enforced.

 

TL;DR : A cheerfully lawless island about the size of Iceland, with a mostly-deserved reputation as a haven for pirates and brigands of all kinds.
