Ability Burnout

Even without a Warden rating, most Kindled enjoy a general boost to their immune system that reduces most illnesses to moderate inconveniences, at worst. However, this does not mean that they can't fall ill at all. Ability Burnout is probably the number 1 cause of Kindled hospitalizations, other than combat injuries.

Ability Burnout is a condition that affects Kindled who, as the name implies, overuse their abilities. Like physical exercise, Abilities typically grow, if not in scope, then control, as they are used. However, overuse tends to have the opposite effect, causing abilities to become more cumbersome to use and generally weaker than their baseline state. While the range of Kindled abilities make it difficult to determine the exact point of overuse, Researchers and Innovators specializing in Kindled abilities refer to it as the point where you go beyond exhaustion and into the realm of breaking instead of straining. Until 2005, Ability Burnout was considered to be permanent, but recent discoveries relating to the events of the bombing of Hiroshima and the debut of Sol has allowed for Ability Burnout to be mitigated, though not fully cured.

Causes

As mentioned earlier, Ability Burnout is caused by the overuse of Kindled abilities, to the point of the Kindled being burnt out and unable to use their abilities, or only able to use a significantly weakened form. Typically, this occurs in high intensity combat, when it is harder for a Kindled to keep track of their personal limit, however, it has also been known to happen outside of combat, particularly during training scenarios. During the buildup to the First Kindled War, most of the failures from the various ignition camps were a result of Ability Burnout, rather than a failure to achieve a Spark Event.

History

While it is difficult to pinpoint the exact first case of Ability Burnout, it is most likely to have occured shortly before or during the First Kindled War. However, due to the fact that Kindled with Ability Burnout typically lost their lives shortly after, most of the information we have on the condition comes not from that tumultuous period, but more recently, with the Attack on the United Nations Department of Kindled Operations headquarters, where Ryusei Takahashi, Sol, was forced to use his abilities to the point of Burnout, eventually resulting in his death 3 years later.
