The Mountain Eater

The Mountain Eater is a giant moving fortress created by dwarves during the Great Judgement. It was constructed by Dwarven Lord Kimbal as a means to consume the demon armies and repurpose their resources to benefit the dwarven armies. However, the fortress never saw combat, as the dwarven kingdom of Noran was wiped out only 3 weeks after the Great Judgement began. The fortress laid dormant in a hidden chamber beneath a mountain until King Nursk, aided by the words of Namek spoken through the Scepter of Pestilence, discovered it. It was then filled with child slaves, the only ones small enough to operate the fortress, and sent on a destructive rampage throughout Noran, consuming the land's natural resources. After two weeks of destruction, all the Human societies in the Plains of Noran were levelled by the Mountain Eater, with their natural resources having been consumed and used to construct Mountain Knights.

Item and Encounter Locations

Floor 1 - Engine Room All enemies on this floor drop between 3 and 10 gp Main Floor: Two Illithids patrol this floor. Balconies: An Illithid on the balconies of the first floor, known as the Overseer, carries the rusted iron key that leads to the second floor. A chest covered in chains can be lockpicked or smashed to retrieve Rocky, a cursed animated rock that speaks to the one its bound to, giving them words of discouragement. The Rock cannot be removed from one's inventory.   Floor 2 - Factory All Illithids on this floor drop between 4-12 gp Main Room: A Mountain Knight in this room contains the key to the left barracks room. Left Barracks Room: The table has a keyring with the keys to open the shackles of the imprisoned children in the Main Room. If used on the door to the Right Barracks Room, the player takes 1d6 Lightning damage. An Illithid in this room has a Bell of Force. When this bell is rung, any creatures within 5 feet of the Illithid must succeed a DC 16 Strength saving throw or take 1d6+1 Force damage and be knocked back 5 feet. This action counts as two actions. Right Barracks Room: This room is mostly empty save for a single Mountain Knight. The missing button to open the main elevator is tied to a string located on a hook next to the door to this room. This hook also contains the key to open the door to the Right Barracks Room. Balconies and Elevator: If anything other than the button to open this elevator is inserted into the button slot, the player takes 1d6 Lightning damage.   Floor 3 - Command Center Two Mountain Knights in this room guard an unarmed Illithid. Upon killing the knights, the Illithid surrenders and gives the players advice on the rest of the dungeon. A transportation rune is in the center of this arena.   Floor 4 - Palace Entrance Main Floor: A single Illithid, who is mopping the tile, guards this floor. The iron door to the outside balcony is a door mimic. If the door is picked, the door comes to life and attacks the player who tried to pick it. If a key is used on the door, the door attacks the player. If the player attempts to open the door the door attacks the player. If the player knocks before opening the door, the door opens as normal. If the door is attacked, it is immune to damage, unless the player rolls a natural 20, in which case the door falls inward off its hinges, then shrivels into nothing. Upper Balconies: An Illithid and a Mountain Knight guard these balconies. Outside Balcony: There is a single chest on this balcony that contains the Chain of Kimbal.    Floor 5 - Barracks and Royal Bedroom Barracks: This room has two Illithids in it. One is awake and patrolling while the other is asleep. On the wall is a key that opens the storage room. If this key is tried on any other door in this area, a rune on the door creates an explosion. Storage Room: Theres a Master Key on a hook on the wall. This key will open every door in the Mountain Eater, aside from the ones that lead to the final elevator. The hook these keys are hanging on is a trap, and if the keys are taken without disarming the trap, the door slams shut, locks itself, and a Gelatinous Cube rises out through a grate in the floor at the far end of the room. The door cannot be lockpicked from the inside. The door can only be opened through an act of strength, if the door is lockpicked from the outside, or if the Gelatinous Cube is defeated. Royal Bedroom: A young princess who is about 16 named Princess Alastra is tied to a chair in this room. If freed, she will tell the players that King Nursk is her father and that he has been corrupted by the Scepter. She will urge the players to kill him in order to put an end to the madness. If not found already, she will tell them that the key to the final elevator is located in one of the nightstands in this room. Gold and other jewelry can be found in this room, but if Princess Alastra sees this she will call the players out.   Floor 6 - Throne Room This room is entirely empty, save for King Nursk and two Swarms of Insects he appears to be conversing with.
