Chain Attacks
This variant rule grants players the option of combining their strength to deal a finishing blow to their opponents. This rule grants three more options for actions and reactions players can take during combat to execute combined attacks.
NEW ACTIONS
INITIATE: While the party has engaged in combat with a legendary creature (one that has Legendary actions and/or Legendary resistances) any player can take this action, where they ready themselves to strike in unison with their team.
The player declares an action or a bonus action that they will take during the Chain Attack. They will perform this action when a Chain Attack is "
Executed"
The "
Initiate" action can be taken only once per combat (a combat is considered to have ended when all enemies are defeated, either by having their HP reduced to 0, fleeing, or surrendering). At the start of their next turn, if the Chain Attack was not "
Executed", this action is lost, and so are any "
Join" actions taken by other players.
JOIN: After a player has taken the "
Initiate" action any player may take this action on their turn. When they take this action each player must declare an action or bonus action they wish to perform during the Chain Attack.
EXECUTE: A player who has taken the "
Initiate" action "
Executes" a Chain attack when they take this reaction. They can take this reaction whenever another player ends their turn. When they do so each player who took the "
Join" action can immediately move up to their movement speed and take the action or bonus action they prepared, they do so in any order they choose to AS A TEAM.
CHAIN ATTACK BENEFITS: Because of the cooperation involved in a Chain Attack, each player who joins in gets a boon that applies to the action or bonus action they chose to take. Each player chooses one boon from the following list:
- You gain advantage on all attacks you make during the Chain Attack.
- Whenever you roll for damage or healing during the Chain Attack, you always roll the maximum value of the dice.
- You can impose disadvantage on all saving throws you force other creatures to make.
- You grant an additional Chain Attack boon to another player.
END OF A CHAIN ATTACK: When all players who joined in on the Chain Attack (including the one who initiated) have performed their action or bonus action, combat continues normally, and no player may take the "
Initiate" action until another combat starts.
