Additional Information

Social Structure

Orien live in small groups - usually 15-30. These groups are usually referred to as herds. Fawns stay with the herd until they reach 5 years. Once they reach approximately 5, many Orien leave to join another herd or to start their own, while others stay.   They typically mate only for a season, but within their herd. Once an Orien is a part of a herd as an adult, it would be extremely unusual (and taboo) to mate outside of the herd.   The herds are led largely through joint agreement, being so small, though there are definitely disagreements. Typically the oldest Orien has the last word in a deadlock.   Some Orien have begun creating a larger encampment, and there are currently approximately 150 there. Most of the older Orien assume this is the folly of youth.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Darkvision out to 60 feet, can see in color.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Oriens tend to be named with 2-3 syllable names, an emphasis on hard vowel sounds and soft consonants. n writing they use many double letters.   Examples include: Illiiri, Onnam, Yrrwa...   Surnames are uncommon, due to the small groups that Orien typically travel in.

Gender Ideals

While the species is split into "antlered" and "not antlered', Orien don't consider things as "gender" instead considering it a distinction along the lines of profession.

Common Etiquette Rules

While the rules vary between herds, there are consistently lots of them. The Orien maintain the rules help keep them together, but many youngsters chafe under them.

Common Dress Code

Though some Orien acquire armor, there is no other clothing. In fawn form the fur largely covers the genital region, but some Orien put on pants when around other species in the form.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

On the day of the full moon, when the sun is at its highest, religious Orien have a small ceremony where they thank the sun and moon for providing. The ritual involves a chant, and specific paint markings on the fur, typically in light blue.   There is a longer version of this ritual performed on the equinoxes.

Common Taboos

Finding love outside the herd   Entering a river

History

Orien are said to be created by Haidar, after the original leaving of the desert. They are a younger species, but have still been around since before written history.   Because of their nomadic ways, it is difficult to track where the Orien originally were, or what they've done. Orien take their own history very seriously, and a few select fawns are trained to be the Keepers of History. These keepers memorize the details of Orien life through the age, and can be called upon to find an incident that might illuminate the current choices. There are not as many Keepers as there are herds, and to be a keeper means you will not ever truly belong. It also means your line ends with you, as there are very few Orien who would break the taboo and find love outside of their herd.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Orien largely stay out of the way of other species. This has changed somewhat recently, as more and more explore the world. Others have always known Orien exist, in the same way that many of us know that elephants exist - yea they're there, maybe you've even seen one or two, but you don't consider them often.
