Onyx Luna

"Have you ever been in the presence of Onyx Luna? It's as if the Void is gazing at you."
— Komrak Magmaforge, dwarven blacksmith

Introduction

Among the metals and ores found across Kena'an, none rival the legend of Onyx Luna. Few have seen it up close, and even fewer have wielded an item- be it a weapon, shield, or artifact- forged from its vantablack essence. The elves believe it to be solidified night, a gift brought to Kena’an during eclipses, when darkness holds dominion over the skies. They call it Mitta-o Mori, the Night Shard. To the dwarves, it is ach-az-egraz, the Light Killer, a name earned from its uncanny ability to absorb light casted around it.

The humans on the other hand, name it Metal of the Skies, attributing its origins to the heavens, an ancient fragment cast down from above aeons ago. For the Eaglors, Onyx Luna is believed to be the work of Verana, the goddess of dreams and prophecy- rare, enigmatic, and dangerous, much like her gift of foretelling.

Each of these stories carry a shard of truth, but none are entirely free of myth or fabrication. For Onyx Luna is not merely a material; it is a mystical source of profound power, one that only a handful in the world can forge, and even fewer dare to wield.

Physical Properties

Onyx Luna is a unique and extraordinarily rare material in Kena'an, steeped in both mystery and reverence. Reports of deposits are as rare as the material itself, with only a handful of fragments ever discovered throughout history. One such shard resides on proud display in the Museum of Thandor, where its very presence draws scholars, artisans, and blacksmiths alike. Many would risk everything for the chance to study this enigmatic substance firsthand.

The following information about Onyx Luna's physical properties has been painstakingly compiled over centuries of rigorous testing, cross-referencing, and verified testimonies from those fortunate enough to work with or witness this fabled material. Each discovery further cements Onyx Luna’s place as one of the most enigmatic and coveted substances in existence.

Eerie Appearance

Completely matte and vantablack, Onyx Luna creates an unnatural void-like effect by absorbing all light around it at a 5ft radius. Its surface is smooth yet unyielding, often mistaken for an unremarkable rock at first glance.

Great Density

Surprisingly dense, Onyx Luna’s weight belies its seemingly delicate flexibility, making it one of the heaviest known metals. A single shard feels impossibly heavy for its size.

Melting Point

Forging this material requires temperatures exceeding that of molten lava. Only a handful of dwarves, masters of ancient techniques, and the Glaciarcs, with their divine Icefire, can manipulate it.

"The heavens wept when the Metal of the Skies fell, for it was never meant for mortal hands.
— excerpt from the "Mandate of the Suntouched""

Extreme Hardness

Stronger than adamantium yet far more flexible than mithril, it is virtually indestructible under normal circumstances, resistant to damage from both physical and magical sources.

Moonlight Shimmer

Onyx Luna is known for its ability to absorb light, yet this property changes when it is exposed to direct moonlight. The material takes on a faint silver shimmer, as if the essence of the night is embedded within it.

Harnessing & Forging

Onyx Luna’s raw form is an enigma to all but the most seasoned miners and researchers. In its natural state, it resembles an unassuming, black stone- easily mistaken for any number of common ores. The true nature of Onyx Luna, however, only becomes apparent once it is cut, polished, or exposed to magical forces. Even a small fragment can reveal its otherworldly properties, but raw deposits are incredibly difficult to identify, and only a handful of scholars have claimed to successfully recognize it in the wild.

The forging of Onyx Luna is a task reserved for only the most skilled and knowledgeable artisans, as the metal itself resists manipulation like no other. There are only two known methods to craft this rare and ethereal material into useful forms, each one as dangerous as it is intricate.

Dwarven Magma Forges

Dwarven Magma Forge

It is said that deep within The Spine, the mountains of Louthiran, the dwarves have constructed ancient forges capable of working with the rare and elusive Onyx Luna. These forges harness the overwhelming heat of molten lava and magma, using their fiery depths to mold and shape the stone-like metal. Forging Onyx Luna is a revered and secret art, passed down through generations of dwarven blacksmiths. The process demands an expert command of both time and temperature, as any misstep could ruin the metal’s integrity. Through their unmatched mastery of these volcanic forges, the dwarves craft weapons and armor that can exploit Onyx Luna’s unparalleled qualities, creating items that are as powerful as they are dangerous.

Glaciarcs' Divine Alchemy

Glaciarc with Icefire

The Glaciarcs, a race created by the god Haestrom, are said to have uncovered a mystical alchemical method known as Icefire, specifically designed to manipulate the enigmatic Onyx Luna. This technique fuses divine magic with alchemy, conjuring an intense, supernatural cold flame that alters the metal’s inherent properties. Icefire is an intricate and perilous process, requiring not only great mastery of alchemy but also the intervention of powerful shamans who can harness the divine energy necessary for the ritual. The flames of Icefire are unlike any other, capable of shaping Onyx Luna in ways no mortal or forge can match. However, the use of this technique is fraught with danger- both for those who wield it and the metal itself.

Dangers of forging & Exposure

"Icefire reveals the metal's soul, yet even we do not fully understand the depths of its creation. It is Haestrom’s will, not ours, that shapes the Onyx Luna."
— A Glaciarc Shaman

The forging of Onyx Luna is a perilous endeavor. Prolonged exposure to the metal during the forging process can cause nightmares and disturbing hallucinations. As the metal seems to interact with the dream world, those who work with it for extended periods are often driven to madness by the visions it brings. This side effect makes working with Onyx Luna dangerous, requiring mental fortitude and caution from any who wish to harness its power.

Legendary Onyx Luna Items

Aegis of Eternal Dusk

The Aegis of Eternal Dusk is a relic of the Glaciarcs, forged by their most legendary shaman, Glorath of the Icefire. According to myth, Haestrom himself appeared to Glorath in a dream, commanding the shaman to create a shield worthy of his divine power. Glorath worked for years until he managed to develop the Icefire and with it to give shape to the Onyx Luna and transform it into an artifact imbued with both protection and destruction.

The shield was bestowed upon the Icebound Champion, Varak, who led the Glaciarcs tribes in their ill-fated war against the Kingdom of Zolirak. Its legendary power allowed Varak to absorb magic and redirect it toward his foes. Yet, the shield bore a heavy price. It tormented Varak's mind with dreams of apocalyptic visions, slowly unraveling his mind.

After Varak’s death, the shield was entombed with him within the heart of a glacier. While some claim it still rests there, whispers tell of its theft by daring grave robbers centuries ago. Its current whereabouts remain unknown, though traces of its influence are rumored to linger wherever madness follows power.

Eclipse Fang

Forged by the exiled dwarven smith Tharvik, the Eclipse Fang is a weapon shrouded in mystery and myth. After being cast out of Louthiran, Tharvik traveled away seeking for a place similar to the volcanic forges to master his craft. Legend holds that he found this place somewhere in the Aerithia Archipelago and that it was there where he forged this blade from fragments of Onyx Luna, tempered in the dying breath of a great dragon.

The Fang found its way into the hands of Elarin Shadowbane, a half-elven warrior who wielded it to break a city-wide curse in the undead lands of Myltery. But with his final, heroic blow, the blade turned against him, casting him from the Material Plane. Neither Elarin nor the Eclipse Fang were ever seen again.

It is said the blade will only resurface during a solar eclipse. Its powers are whispered to include unparalleled sharpness and an ability to cut through magical wards, though wielders risk being marked by its curse.

The Obsidian Eye

Crafted by Sivara of the Twilight Veil, a prophet-mage among the Eaglors, the Obsidian Eye is a relic of foresight and peril. Using a shard of Onyx Luna, Sivara carved the orb by hand and fused it with her own soul, granting it unparalleled divinatory power. The Eye is said to reveal the innermost secrets of fate and provide visions of both distant futures and immediate dangers.

However, this knowledge comes at a grave cost. Each use of the Eye burdens the user with harrowing nightmares of futures they failed to alter. These visions often drive the wielder to paranoia or despair, leaving them haunted by their inability to act on all they have seen.

The last record of the Obsidian Eye places it in the desolate wastelands of Pariant, where it was rumored to be sought by treasure hunters, prophets, and madmen alike. Whether the artifact lies hidden, lost, or claimed, its legend persists as a beacon- and a warning- to all who seek to know too much.

"Dreams shaped into metal are dangerous things. Onyx Luna bears the weight of every possibility and every nightmare."
— Zephyrus the Dreamer, Oracle of the Lunar Spire

Supernatural Properties

Onyx Luna is far from just a physical marvel. When refined and worked into weapons, armor, or enchanted items, its supernatural properties come to the forefront. These abilities make it a prized and dangerous material for those who know its secrets.

Cold Resistance

A piece of armor or shield made by Onyx Luna grants the wielder immunity to extreme natural cold and resistance to cold supernatural sources. Onyx Luna shields against the coldest environments, making its bearer impervious to frostbite or freezing temperatures.

Shadowblending

When shaped into armor, Onyx Luna allows its wearer to merge with the shadows, becoming almost invisible in dimly lit areas. This blending ability gives the wearer a supernatural stealth advantage, making it nearly impossible to detect in low-light conditions.

Cold Damage

Weapons forged from Onyx Luna are imbued with chilling energy, allowing them to deal cold damage on impact. These weapons can freeze enemies upon striking, reducing their movement and draining their warmth.

Enhancement of Divination Magic

Onyx Luna is deeply attuned to the magic of prophecy and divination. Items crafted from the metal- such as scrying mirrors, crystal balls, and wands- boost the user’s divination abilities, enhancing their accuracy and the clarity of their visions. Seers who work with Onyx Luna find their glimpses into the future more vivid, precise, and far-reaching.

With way more patience than I usually have :D Honestly CSS is a black hole and I have fallen in it! I'm glad you liked it <3

Wonderfully done. The only thing that I would possibly change is the Condensation point. That is usually equivalent to the boiling point (condensation is gas to liquid, instead of liquid to gas), so saying the condensation point is extremely low is a little confusing. It may be better to say that it becomes brittle only at extremely cold temperatures, but it depends on what you are trying to get out of it.   Everything is wonderfully written, including the artifacts descriptions, which are ready to slot into any TTRPG campaign as a plot hook. Your formatting is also on point.   Great work

Feel free to stop by and read some of my strangely cold themed WorldEmber articles, like the mysterious Armored Forest, the wayward mage Jak of the Rime, or the deadly Trapper's Bane. For those that want to get away from the cold you could always ask Damien Dreamblossom if he has a recommendation for you...

Thank you so much! I’m really happy to hear that you liked it, and I truly appreciate your thorough feedback. You’re absolutely right about the condensation point—it's something I’ve been meaning to revise because it doesn’t quite express what I intended. I was actually thinking of the term as it’s used in construction, specifically with metals, rather than the change in the state of matter. I just wanted to wait for the category judge (you!) to see it in its original form as it was at the end of WorldEmber before making any changes. Thanks again! <3

Every article I read from you you somehow find a way to make even more cool ideas for the layout and css! Really interesting material seeing what it can accomplish but the risks it poses. The items made with it must be quite rare considering how difficult it is to identify sources in the wild.

Feel free to check my entries for the World Anvil Worldbuilidng Awards if you want to see what I am up to!

Thank you! I never imagined I would be into something like CSS, but here we are... And you are right, items made of Onyx Luna are extremely rare and in most cases it is used in complicated, powerful artifacts, not mundane stuff.
