Genasi

It began as a way to try and save the next generation from the predicted rise in void storms. People were afraid, still recovering and rebuilding from a quake that had sunk several miles of populated land with storms predicted on the horizon. How would the young survive?   A small company that worked on the earliest stages of augmentations and cybernetics had something to offer, nanotech that had been created out of materials pulled from the void. It adapted the body to certain forces of nature, making one more resilient against them. However, it could only adapt young bodies. Growing bodies prior to the onset of puberty were required, the nanotech implanted and left to develop as the child's body did. The earlier the better, they said. For the children to become accustomed to their evolved selves.   In the decades after the heavy storms, the company expanded and the populace of their enhanced creations grew, and now they had a name. Genasi. Taken from the oldest Keltrexian stories of the creators of the isles, an individual who had shaped the ground through the waters and cooled lava to make stone. The population is not large in the modern day as now most who become Genasi come from those who can afford the procedure for their young. In the last 300 or so years they have been more or less labeled as "designer babies", belonging to the upper class as a show of wealth and superior humanity. Though it can be noted that not all Genasi stay within such circles, some preferring simpler means of living closer to the elements they most align with.   Every Genasi develops a particular affinity for an aspect of nature. This aspect then changes the individual in turn. The earlier in life one underwent the procedure the more likely they are to have distinctive features that identify them as these designer children. Those changed in infancy will often take on skin colors and hair qualities that set them apart from the start, such as one with the affinity for fire having skin like ash and hair that appears as if it is eternally smoldering. Or one with the affinity to earth appearing as if they are made of stone. Meanwhile those who undergo it just before puberty are more likely to show subtler signs. Such as someone with the water affinity gaining markings like dripping trails of water or eyes that reflect light as water does, and even someone with air having hair that seems to ever be teased by a breeze no one else can feel.   While some may get away in many ways with passing as human and escaping the mixed sentiments of their origins, others are not so lucky. And they can never quite truly escape showing what they are.
