Verteidiger Paramount Gronvar
Gronvar is the Verteidiger Paramount (ver-tie-dee-ger) - or 'chief protector' - of the Pallatian throne. A Mjandir from Swenmark, Gronvar served as a bodyguard to King Henrik's mother during their turbulent years fleeing assassins and agents of their enemies.
Henrik's mother passed shortly before he would return to Sardoron to stake his claim to the throne and before she did so, she made Gronvar promise that he would protect her son with his life. Gronvar swore as such, and when Henrik defeated the Stormsjager's attempts to block his ascension, he was made Verteidiger Paramount of Pallas. This traditional position is the head of the King's bodyguards, making it a position requiring great trust.
Gronvar has served as an advisor to Henrik's marshals and is arguably a military leader as much as he is a bodyguard. He is said to be a creature of duty and that he would have returned to join his people in their fight against the Kyotese had he not been urged to do his duty to his mistress' son. He has a steely, but disgruntled, attitude. Many assume that he does not want the position he holds, but does so out of his strength of character.
