The Feywood

This ethereal, enchanted forest covers the majority of the Dendelf Peninsula. Once, it perhaps covered much more, but the activities of man and other mortals have reduced it to its current (still vast) size. The forest is not believed to be of this world. Wood Elves tell legends of the Malinalda - the Heart Tree. This enormous tree sits at the centre of a great crater, over a mile wide, at its lowest point. From this tree, they say wild magic sails forth, planting more trees and supernatural nature in a rapidly growing, magical forest. The Wood Elves believe that climbing the tree leads to another realm from which the real Feywood exists, a wood that covers an entire world.   The Feywood is generally feared by humans, who live on its edges in both large and small villages. Its inhabitants are not all malicious, however. The villagers fear the ‘Fercor’, or beastmen that are said to snatch babies in the night and sacrifice humans and other beings alike for unholy rituals. The reality is that these ‘monsters’ are simply satyrs that live a harmonious life within the forest. Tales of young maidens and lads disappearing in the woods probably has a much more ‘happy’ ending than ritualistic sacrifice. The satyrs of the Feywood live in small communal tribes, usually built in the treetops. They have a carefree attitude, and place song, dance and debauchery before all other wants and desires. They are led by an elder; an old satyr who’s carefree days are long behind them, and now looks after the entire tribe. Many of the older satyrs take on the role of swornkin and, in essence, become rangers who scout for danger, hunt for food and protect their villagers.   While far from their great city of Aysindir, the Wood Elves of the Feywood are far larger in number than their northern kin. Three great realms of the elves border the heart of the forest: Dywndel, Raedvly and Kyneth. Life here may seem idyllic as the songs of the elves echo between the high, tree-built palaces of their miniature kingdoms, but the wood elves are surrounded by danger and they carry strict rules. The average wood elf is forbidden from entering the heart of the Feywood. To do so, unless they carry an exception, is an egregious offence.
