The Black Company
Where the River Olga forks around the walled city of Nurem, and before its great Eastern Gate, hundreds of tents and temperory housing stand under great flags and banners flying dark colours that ripple in the wind. This is the encampment of the Black Company - the most well known and greatest mercenary band in Karthica. The exploits of the Black Company are legendary and this band of soliders for hire have been involved in the wars of the Warring Kingdoms of the eastern coast of the continent since its founding.
Their prescence in Nurem was orchestrated by the Four Lords shortly after the end of the Great War. As Libertia retreated from the city for unknown reasons, manpower was required to maintain order in a city that was on the verge of collapse. Lord Klaid dispatched a letter with an offer: eight thousand gold pieces a week in an indefinite defence contract.
Weeks later, instead of a response, the Black Company itself arrived in Nurem and readily accepted the offer. The Company has been in the city ever since.
The Company eclipses the City Guard in manpower, but does not perform any day to day duties that the guard typically enact. For the most part, the Black Company and the five thousand men they employ serve as a deterrent to the outside world: Nurem is ready to defend itself. The men who serve in the unit do not all live in the camp that lies at the river fork - four thousand fighters live in several camps further out from the city and rotate with the other one thousand fighters active in the city.
There is great concern in the city surrounding the Black Company's ability to act in the city without fearing punishment, and units frequently become involved in violence with gangs and even city guards.
Structure
The Black Company is led by a Stratigos. Serving under the Stratigos are the Dakimos, or captains. Each Dakimos commands several Archilo, or lieutenants.
Each Archilo commands a platoon of 24 men. Each platoon has four Sartori, one of which has seniority as Sartori Maxi and serves as second in command to the Archilo. Each Sartori leads a unit of 4-7 Raori, or soldier.
