The Energies
Careful what you say about the spirits my dear. They can't touch you right now but they hear everything, and if the day ever comes when they can touch you, I wouldn't want to be first on their list. - @LortarWhen Rymaldir created the material plane, it was just that, material. Rymaldir was so ordered and unchanging by nature that even energy was out of his ability (or nature depending on your perspective) to create. Karnum was cold, the moons were dim, and even the Sun had yet to light. It was only after Rymaldir reached into the chaos between realms that energy outside of himself was brought into the world in the form of his children. After his children were created, it was then they that brought energy into the world. Baelith ignited the son, Tariel caused the winds to blow for the first time, and all of the creation gods and goddesses created the first life on Karnum. The details above are known by most inhabitants of Karnum. It is simple and it fits neatly into the creation narrative, but something that has both intrigued and confounded scholars for millenia is the fact that the energies created by the gods do not fit neatly into the material plane. In fact there is actually energy completely separate from the material plane, forming layers upon Karnum which cannot be seen but often felt and sometimes tapped into. The chill down ones spine does not originate from within but from without. The warmth in ones heart does not originate from the feeling of love but rather from the energies which are drawn to the feeing of love. See, no matter how one slices it, physical material is law, and the energy that changes said material is chaos. Rymaldirs influence is still strong and more powerful than that of any of the other gods. Matter is susceptible to change but it will only tolerate so much. There are fiery energies from Baelith all around, but as matter gets hotter, whether by mortal intervention or other means, it requires exponentially more of that fiery energy to increase the temperature of matter as it gets hotter. Not only that, but matter actively repels this energy in such a way that, say in our example of fire, only places where the pressence of fiery energies is so dense that they can go nowhere but the matter does anything catch on fire. This strange aspect of energy makes it so that "planes" of energy exist layered upon the world. It is from these planes of energy that evokers summon bolts of fire, abjurers magically block attacks, and conjurers summon their minions (though conjurors must still have matter on hand for their minions to take shape). Additionally it is possible for mortals to traverse these planes. Mortals are not only composed of the matter that Rymaldir created, but also of the energies the gods breathed into them. Thus if a mortal can seperate their energy, often called their soul, form their material form they may traverse these energy planes, though doing so is both unpredictable and often dangerous.
Manifestation
"Look above! Baelith's Fires burn bright, his favor is upon us! Fear not the enemy, tommorrow they shall be slain!" Garon Flametalon, First General of the Sun LegionScholars refer to The Energies as "layering upon" the world because these forces are always present even when unseen, but this does not mean this expression does not extend further. Though in the day the Sun blinds the eye to them, at night one can look above to see The Energies surging across the sky. Rymaldir's creation is resistant to energy, but in the matterless expanses of space (or the heavens as most mortals call them) The Energies run free. Due to Kelthuzamach's meddlings energy is constantly being destroyed, both on Karnum and in the heavens above it. This being the case it is neccessary for the gods to create more energy to keep the world moving, and it is in the low-resistance heavens above that The Energies are created and gather for their various purposes. This manifests as bright and vibrant colors coursing across the sky, swirling around Karnum's five moons, striking down the ground, and a number of other phenomena. These events seem chaotic and unpredictable to the casual observer, but expert arcanists can actually use the movements of The Energies to predict the flows of energy, allowing them to forsee weather, increases in magical potential, and other important events. To give a historically important example, in 1213 A.F. the Sun Legion, an army of holy warriors whose weapons were enhanced by the fiery energies of Baelith, waited until Baelith's fires could be seen even in the dead of night to attack them the next day when they knew Baelith's energies would be at their height. Historical accounts of the battle report whole ranks of the enemy (whose name has been lost to history) being consumed by the 4ft. tall flaming waves produced by the swings of their swords.
