Xyloca Fever
Xyloca fever is a condition caused by ingesting manza fruit which is laced with xylocaylen fungi. The fruit and the fungi are native to a small remote world located in the Roselexian Sector called Hexius. On this world, the natives ingest this fungi to prevent seizures caused by a degenerative blood disorder common there which produces abnormal blood cells. The fungi feast on these abnormal cells and are easily eliminated from the bloodstream along with other waste products. However, when xylocaylen fungi are ingested by species who are not native to Hexius, and don't have these abnormal blood cells, it can lead to xyloca fever. This is why it is illegal to export any substance containing xylocaylen fungi outside of Hexius. Of course, that doesn't stop some unscrupulous people from doing it and selling the fungi on the black market.
It has become popular in certain circles throughout the Roselexian Sector to consume xylocaylen fungi as a recreational drug. When taken in small doses, it produces a feeling of euphoria caused by a neurotoxin released by the fungi as they starve to death in the bloodstream. The effects are generally short-lived and relatively harmless, but when taken in larger doses and/or over a prolonged period of time, the individual will develop xyloca fever.
Symptoms
Early stage symptoms of xyloca fever include elevated temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure, rapid and shallow breathing, confusion and incoherent behavior. As the condition progresses, the individual will experience delusions, hallucinations and become increasingly unable to distinguish reality to the point of slipping into psychosis. At this stage, if left untreated, the internal organs will begin to fail and the condition can become fatal.Prevention
Simply do not ingest manza fruit or any substance containing xylocaylen fungi unless you are a native of Hexius!Treatment
The first step in treating xyloca fever is to refrain from any further consumption of xylocaylen fungi. After that, standard medications are administered to assist the patient in flushing the fungi out of their system. When treatment is begun in the early stages, most people will make a full recovery. However, if the condition has progressed to the late stages, there may be irreparable physical and mental damage leading to permanent disability or even death.
