The Sentinel
The Keeper of the Law - The Sentinel
Core Alignment: Lawful Controlling
Core Domains: Order, Death, Grave, Law
The rigid and yellow prism that formed the being called the Arbiter, seemed to dictate much of what the Arbiter would become. They found they thrived in the order created through the structure and rules in the world, as the Sovereign began to create their iron strongholds. The Arbiter found themselves judge and interpreter of those rules, slowly giving way to reason and thought through the world. They continued to explore and lay judgments through Kalio until the Mask helped deliver the first Mortal soul from Kalio. At this point the Pure had discovered the various heavens, the temptation had found places filled with fiendish influence, and the Storm had managed to slip their way into a place of untamed chaos. Curious, the Arbiter attempted to follow the trail of the soul of the first dead, wondering where it would travel from Kalio.
He discovered the grand Well of Souls, which stretched across all places of existence. The man during his life was neither virtuous nor cruel, and he had not struck any deals with those who exist beyond, so his soul fell into the well, waiting to be claimed by something that would recycle its worth, and make it viable once more to return to Kalio. He sat there and realized that only his expertise would truly help here, and he took the soul in hand and molded it himself into the first of the Inevitables. A being of Law, that would help others who passed and would shuttle souls to where they belonged, and if they belonged nowhere, it would help form more. Under the guidance of the arbiter, the place that formed around the Well became known as Terminus.
As the Void War raged on, the deaths of thousands of beings, both mortals and other planar beings flooded the Well, and the Arbiter was forced to remain outside the world for such a large portion of the War, instead mounting their own defense of the Well, if only to make sure mechanisms and judgments in place would continue, allowing all of the planes to refuel, and mortals to be born again when they had been properly cleaned through an existence on the Reclamation Planes.
However, it came the time that the Arbiter return to Kalio, when she passed, and the Arbiter placed their heart into the soil to help keep the lands alive. Their soul passed on and was sent through the cycles they had built. The modern incarnations of the Arbiter are not nearly suited to handle the complexities of Terminus, so they often will defend its laws from those who would take advantage of it, and enforce the laws of the Inevitables where they can. They also stand in as judges often, sometimes in situations as small as settling an argument between farmers, or as large as cases of traitorous conduct in a kingdom. Many now look at the Sentinel, the name of those who came after the original Arbiter, as the ultimate word of law in Kalio, but it’s been often proven, the Sentinel can make mistakes. After all, they are mortal.
Core Beliefs of the Sentinel’s Faith
There is life beyond your own. Selfishly prolonging a life, means that new life cannot begin beyond Kalio’s Borders, and in time it will halt new life in Kalio herself, as those lives end. Undeath, is the worst affront to this charge, as it holds a soul in a damaged shell, begging to move on.
The Beings of the Planes beyond are not good or evil. They do not believe in such things, and they consider much of what occurs in Kalio foreign and often immoral. You cannot judge them, just as they have learned with time, they cannot judge us. We exist in a symbiont circle. Our deaths allow their lives, just as theirs allow ours. If either of us ceases to exist, we all pass on from this existence. The Void is our only true enemy.
There is only one law that matters, and is absolute. Death is not a matter to be trifled with. All other laws are meant to be interpreted by those who are trusted with its authority, and can change with those who interpret its meaning.
