Magi Bugs

Magic is common throughout the world of Kaleera, found freely floating invisibly all around at all times. While it is often is in too loose of concentrations to have any noticeable effect on the local environment, there are ways to manipulate the ambient energy and many different species have adapted to do so. While man often thinks of themselves as the masters of the arcane arts, many creatures have biology that allows them to harness magic for their own purposes. Most of these are too small for the human eye to see, but of those that can be are most typically insects; these are known as "magi bugs" or "magi insects" and have little to no relation to each other, with the term instead being used to refer to any species that can use magic to some capacity.
The species of magi bugs known to Mage are ever increasing, but it is noted that they are vastly out numbered by more conventional insects: magic is difficult to use by mages with years of training, especially in places of loose concentration like much of the world is, and can be dangerous too, both of which make adapting to use magic as a species difficult. In addition to these caveats, in species adapted to use magic it seems to take quite a bit of energy to use, thus restricting the usage to species above a certain size which is likely why insects are the most likely to use magic over larger species.
As the ways which insects come to adapt to use magic is varied and near limitless, this will serve as a broad overview of the various common species and groups of insects seen throughout Kaleera:

Notable Species of Magi Bugs

Chunguba Termite

A notable sight on in the central regions of the Nbundo River Basin are the massive termite mounds that dot the savannas. These are built by the chunguba, a species of termite unique to the center of the region, and channel some of the magic from its Lae Line to make use for themselves. In this case, the termites draw in positively charged magic when constructing their nests, which allows their mounds to be much more durable than typical termite mounds. This allows them to build massive mounds that can reach up to 50 feet in height that can only be broken into by the most powerful insectivores.

Meteor Flies

Of the many groups of insects that are completely unique to Kaleera due to their magical adaptations, the most numerous and notable are the meteor flies. These insects are completely their own unique group, however, many naturalists have noted their resemblance to dragonflies and thus they are generally considered closer to them than any other group of insect.
