Of the original thirty members, only three survived to report back. The others had perished during their perilous journey.

The news they carried shook the very foundations of knowledge on the island of Ashnoor. For centuries, the so-called Enlightened Lands—Geldheim, Hadovea, the Doomsayers, and the Contested Lands—believed that they and the Erayax were the only organised civilisations on the island.

The expedition revealed a very different truth: numerous diverse societies had risen from the ashes of Aringale’s fall. During the great southward exodus, these peoples had retreated to their ancestral realms. Over the past thousand years, most have struggled simply to survive against the might of the Erayax and their Valisdia allies (and at times themselves).

Some of the realms the expedition encountered were cautiously hospitable; many more were hostile or deceitful. Yet all shared one trait—they had little interest in the conflict raging in the south between Geldheim and Hadovea.
