Keth Arrn Mountains
Today I saw why the Keth Arnn Mountains are off-limits. Today was the last day I relax in my post and start to worry about the future of our kingdom.
I've been a soldier with the Silvestris Army for about 25 years. As a human, that means I've earned the right for a few peaceful years in a leadership position before I retire. My career wasn't particularly outstanding, I've helped detain criminals, quell riots, participate in war drills, but I've never shown any leadership promise or special aptitude. Unless you count the aptitude for surviving and continuing to serve in the military. So over the years I've earned a small leadership position of a remote sentry post. It's actually very nice out here on the southern edge of the Alushtas Xilo forest, just north of the Wildcloak Sands Desert and west of the Keth Arrn Mountain range. Officially we are here to observe any strange occurrences on the mountain and watch for any signs of a possible invasion from the Drow that supposedly live under the mountain. I've never seen anything, until last night that is.
The first time I came to this outpost I was struck by the beauty and majesty of the mountains. The mountain range looms over the base, higher than I expected. Creatures big and small can be seen roaming the wilderness at all times of the day. The rock itself is a deep, dark color, almost black and reflective or glossy under the right sunlight. The trees and even the animals all seem to inherit that same dark hue. Maybe it's just my imagination, what with the bright golden forest to my north and west, but the mountain itself seems dark, like its inside holds terrible secrets. Sound travels exceedingly well out here, too. I don't have much experience with mountains, but even in the plains it never seemed that sound could be so loud and echoing. Animal calls seem louder and closer. A few times there have been large rockfalls and the echoing thunder of those events seem to linger for hours. Storms are frequent at the top of the peak, but never make it down to our base. I guess that's why they call the desert a 'rain shadow'.
About two days ago one of my men spotted a creature we've never seen before. It was huge, easily longer than a catapult or trebuchet. It had a mottled dark grey skin color, that seemed almost to be made of stone itself. It had twelve legs. It had a long thin serpentine-like body, with a huge tooth-filled mouth. It even had small horns on the side of its head. Well away from the fort, we observed it hunt and eat. But only at night. Only the gods know where it went during the day. If that wasn't enough to subdue any prey it wanted on the mountain, it had a lightning breath attack. I've heard of dragons breathing fire or ice, this looked like how that was described to me. Except this was lightning. I shit you not, actual lightning. It's a good thing it never decided to come near the fort because we would have been hard pressed to force it away, much less kill it. I sent my report on the creature to Scient Shantar yesterday. That was before today's events that left me terrified of what might lay under the mountain.
In the deepest part of night they emerged from the mountain somewhere and cornered the creature. They looked like elves, but with very dark skin. It took me a few minutes to realize, they were drow; better known as dark elves. I had every sentry on duty. Luckily they had no interest in us or else didn't know we were there. There were about 6 or 7 drow, with all the fighting I couldn't tell the exact number. Regardless, they slaughtered the creature. Some of them even took a lightning breath head-on. It barely seemed to slow them down. It took less than a minute for the group of drow to kill the creature.
I've never seen fighting like that in my life and remember I'm a career military man. Two things immediately went through my mind. One- the drow were real. And two- if they were to invade out land, there would be no stopping them. I've heard the legends of the drow and their ruthlessness. I believed all of those stories in that instant. If they saw us and decided to make sure our outpost doesn't report back on them... I'd be hard-pressed to stop them. I've never sent a report to Scient Shantar in the middle of the night, but I did yesterday. Many of my men begged to deliver. They knew as much as I did that if the drow came, we'd be no much for thier skill. I pray to the gods every minute they didn't see us.
