Battle for Pendle
23 of Arawain, Year 2500
Battle of the Destruction of Pendle, also knowns as Demon-Run
As seen from Colin Screen, soldier in the Pendle army, human, male
The demons and devils had rallied together for one last assault. Even though the army has been venturing into the wilderness to destroy hordes of demons, there are more standing beyond the castle walls than can be counted. I'm no stranger to battle, but I fear for the safety of everyone in this city. King Oth Pinebender has promised this will be the last of the demons, but how can we match up against such a horde? The last few years have seen the king become increasingly unstable. While I've never been in his audience I can hear the grumbles and comments from officers and others. It seems he is slowly going mad and dabbling in eldritch magic. I hope to see my friends and family after this battle.
As if by some unseen signal, all the demons are advancing at once! Quickly to Arms! "To Arms!" is repeated and spread throughout the Pendle Army. I only hope we stand a chance.
Several hours later...
I've been battling for hours! There is still no end in sight to the demons. They've long since overrun the city. I fear all hope is lost. I hear a roar in the distance. Dragons! They've come to defend us! A pair of dragons arrive on the scene. A brilliant brass sheen reflects off the sun as the first dragon breaths a line of fire right through the demon's army. A slivery sparkle glitters off the other as it breaths freezing cold further on in the city, hopefully destroying more demons than humanoids. The tide slowly begins to turn, until suddenly something happens. What is that sound and light? "It's coming from the throne room!" I hear another soldier shout. Then more shouts, "King Pinebender has saved us!", "Victory is ours", and other victorious chants. A red light washes down from the king's castle. Red? Is it truly something from the King, or a weapon from a demon?! As it advances demons disintegrate in front of my eyes. So do some men. Not all, but many on both sides are slaughtered in the advancing red wave. Everyone, demon and humanoid alike, turns to run. Before anyone gets far it washes over us, obliterating at least 90% of the fighters. The rest of the battle is swift. I turn back to look at the city and it has been leveled. The castle is rubble. The outer wall is little more tumbled bricks. Houses are flattened.
With the battle done, clean up and recovery efforts begin. It is slow and painful. Many bodies are never found. The city must be rebuilt. As cleanup efforts begin, strange gems are found on the battlefield. They are named dragonshards. It is thought the dragons created them when they slew great swaths of the demon horde. We will rebuild and with time this city will prosper once again.
