The Magic Types of Jeslore

In Jeslore there are 3 kinds of magic: Arcane, Spiritual, and Psychic. All of these have a very different source. Arcane magic gets its power and functionality from manipulating the world's arcane climate. Spiritual magic is a skill that needs to be learned to unlock the ability to commune with spirits. Psychic magic is a genetic thing and obtained by winning the genetic lottery.

Arcane Magic

Arcane magic is an exceptionally difficult skill to master and can take over 40 years for any results to make themselves visible, and fully mastering it could take over 90 years. Many races have an inherent ineptitude in using magic, the elves especially, while some might have an easier time mastering it. But using magic remains incredibly difficult even for those who might be attuned to it.   The first step of using magic involves establishing control over the magicka of Jeslore and funneling it through a "speaker. Speakers are tools to cast spells and can take many shapes from modified guns to simple wands. Magicka by default only has the effect of growing plants, as it is the force that makes life possible on Jeslore. By funneling magicka through a series of crystals, the spell can take on a different effect, and extensive knowledge of chemistry is required to link the crystal's chemical makeup to desired effects.   It is by far the most powerful and varied magic type of Jeslore, but not everything is known yet even now. Research is still on going, and new tomes are uncovered by the archeology teams of the college every day.

Spiritual magic

When a person is spiritually inclined, they will be able to see spirits when they cross from the spirit realm in our world, and even be able to commune with them. These people are referred to as Shamans. Parents will generally notice their children's abilities around the age of 11, and it is generally diagnosed by detailed descriptions of unnatural looking creatures appearing before them. Generally these creatures appear in dreams first, and in the real world second. A person can be born spiritually inclined, and it is generally seen as a gift, but it is also a skill that can be taught by someone who is already a Shaman.   Shamans can commune with creatures from the spirit realm, who long for contact with mortals. They are willing to trade knowledge for knowledge, essentially if you give them knowledge they might find interesting, which can be as banal as a newspaper clipping, a spirit will then bestow upon that person a magical ability. A person can have multiple abilities if they meet more than one spirit, but encounters are pretty rare and the deal is not always accepted. It is also important not to spook or anger the spirit, as that might result in them taking away an ability, if the user has one.   There are many abilities a spirit can give, from Glitch's pressure point paralyzation to communing with animals. But the most coveted ability is a guardian angel, a manifestation of the soul that will protect the user at all costs. There are many versions of guardian angels, and each has its own unique ability matching the personality and temperament of its protectee. Another highly sought after ability is the ability to conjure items, teleportation, and other things that are normally only possible by buying expensive technology.   Spiritual magic is directly connected to the dragons and elder guardians, beings that grow indefinitely and will give up their physical form in a ritual as to not take up living space of the mortal races of Jeslore. Because their bodies are merely vessels for their spirits which carry on to the spirit realm, it is seen as a sign of maturity to walk the bridge in their culture, a noble duty to commune with the mortals of Jeslore, and a great honour to perhaps one day find your kindred spirit.   Spiritual magic is directly connected to the druids of Jeslore, elusive champions of the dragons and elder guardians who have found their kindred spirits and bear them on their torso as a living tattoo, symbolizing an eternal bond and shared duty.   The druids are masters of the spiritual magic, but they aren't the only ones using it. Spiritual magic is relatively easy to learn. The process of becoming spiritually inclined ultimately boils down to flipping a mental switch, and the communing process is very easy. It just involves a lot of luck of actually finding one. Most of the spiritual magic abilities are more on the physical side and tend to be martial arts techniques, but the rarer ones are undeniably magic such as controlling vines, growing stone over skin, having the speed and flexibility of the wind, or the ability to cast fire balls out of your hands.   The catch is that what is learned from a spirit may not be passed down, and betraying this pact is a serious taboo among Shamans. The problem is that the spirits, until they find their kindred spirit, can not actually recognize who they are talking to, so unless it is found out by other individuals there are very few repercussions to breaking that rule.   The origins of the spiritual magic: The dragons and the elder guardians are both races extremely averse to violence and conflict. Only the dragons have been involved in a war, and it was only to get their sacred lands back. So even if they do find out someone is abusing their gift and know where they are, they refuse to take actions and have faith that the situation will resolve themselves.   While both the dragons and elder guardians have a lot of faith in the races of Jeslore, they are aware that they are prone to hubris. But they also have faith that those that fall into the trap of hubris will find themselves destroyed by it sooner than later.

Psychic magic

Psychic magic is incredibly powerful, and even easier to master. To make it even better: No tools are required to use it except for the brain. Psychic powers are obtained by winning the genetic lottery, and it is extremely rare. Because there is no arduous process to learning and controlling these ability, psychics, as opposed to mages, are viewed as superheroes almost, being gifted abilities by some greater power to make Jeslore a better place. In the past, this toxic encouragement has gone to the past of some psychics, but the Psi-Order that was established in the early Vortaustkank era has seen to it that all psychics that they find will grow up well adjusted.   The Psi-Order is a quasi-religious organization that believes the universe has granted them powers for a reason, and they are to ensure that psychics use their powers responsibly. They spend a lot of time trying to locate newfound psychics, and keep a close eyes on therapy channels, kindergarten communications, and school communications with the help of co-operating governments to find new psychics. When a young psychic is located, the parents are contacted and with their permission, the Psi-Order will begin training them to wield their powers, but do it responsibly. They are taught morals, basic sciences, and prepared for life much like they would in a school, but they maintain the opportunity to work with the Psi-Order to root out rogue psychics that couldn't be caught on time, and assist the galactic council however they can.   Because psychic powers such as pyrokenisis, clairvoyance, mind control, and telepathy can be extremely dangerous in the wrong hands, the Psi-Order works day and night to keep things under control, and they have undercover agents all over the galaxy. They are the only branch of the council government that sends agents into other factions with impunity. There are Psi-Order agents on every planet known to the council, but the only thing they do is locate other psychics to prevent disasters.   Being a psychic is easy and grants a lot of power, without needing the discipline that someone using spiritual or arcane magic. It is a recipe for disaster, and it is why the Psi-Order is the way it is. They are a generally accepted part of most societies, as they are polite and not controlling at all. They are also non partisan despite being funded by the galactic council. It will not join in on conflicts, but it will also not prevent its agents from helping if they wish to do so.
