Scavenger corps

"When planets are only recently colonized, the scavengers are sent out. These brave soldiers face uncharted territory and foreign threats to discover resources, find food and sample local materials." - Short description hanging at scavenger barracks.

Composition

Manpower

Scavenger squads are typically 3-4 units strong. Their numbers need to be small enough to avoid being too present for local wildlife. Soldiers are carefully selected for scavenger squads and each needs a set of unique, specialized skills. Each squad has at least one floral expert, a doctor, a gunsmith, and a mapper. All other skills that are more combat oriented are given in training.

Equipment

Scavengers have full access to any peacemaker armory and are free to take what they need (while still needing to fill out forms). Scavenger soldiers are put in squads based on their combat preference and skillset, as such their weapons of choice are finetuned to maximize squad effectivity and achieve a well-balanced squad. As far as weaponry goes they generally have a balanced unit with at least one juggernaut and one scout.   One soldier (usually the one carrying heavy weapons) will get the nickname of 'mule' who carries other equipment that is used for identifying materials. They always carry state of the art science equipment to differentiate edible local flora from poisonous flora as well as cooking equipment. Lastly, gas masks are mandatory for scavengers.

Weaponry

Scavengers are given a variety of weapons but they prefer durable and reliable missions due to the insane lengths of their missions. There's typically archers or even melee fighters in scavenger squads and when they do carry guns they're typically solar powered energy weapons or run on a quantum carburetor.

Vehicles

Scavengers are expected to keep a low profile so they are not usually given vehicles and exclusively travel on foot.

Structure

There's a significant amount of scavenger squads but generally, their squads fall out of the regular chain of command. Scavengers are rarely deployed on standard expeditions and when they are it's usually on recon missions. Scavengers don't directly answer to a specific general but more to the needs of what a settlement asks of them or what intel their fellow squads out on the field give them. They are however obligated to retreat or be sent out whenever a fort commander orders them to do so.

Tactics

Scavengers are no warfare force and thus can't rely on orthodox military tactics to deal with hostiles. Scavengers mainly deal with hostile wildlife and extreme environmental hazards rather than an enemy army. Their mission is to very crudely chart an area, identify threats and record materials and food items safe for use inside a settlement. Soldiers in scavenger squads are expected to be creative rather than stalwart and ordinate.

Training

To even consider signing up for a scavenger training soldiers are expected to have at least a bachelor's degree in Gunsmithing, Mapping, Botany or Medical science. If the education checks out soldiers are trained for 6 years in 3 countries with the harshest weather conditions known to Jeslore to prepare for the conditions they might experience on missions. Based on their preference they are trained with the best of the peacemaker soldiers and council commandos with weapons, armor and the use of power armor. Before being deployed, soldiers are expected to graduate from each training with at least a b+.

Logistics

Logistical Support

Scavengers are expected to be independent, their logistical support is very scarce. At most, they can request an airlift to evacuate in case one of them gets injured beyond the capabilities of the equipment packed. Scavenger missions can last up to 6 months easily, rescue missions for them are given high priority but have proven to be less than effective with the lack of a map.

Auxilia

When a scavenger calls in help, any and all soldiers from the air force to the navy are expected to drop what they're doing (unless they're defending against an attack) and get to their location ASAP. Typically though, the only other division they work with is the air force to request supply drops and airlifts.

Upkeep

Generally, Scavengers are seen as national heroes so their pay was agreed to be almost similar to that of a high commanding officer. Except for the charity cut that high commanding officers need to deduct from their paycheck is significantly lower (High commanding soldiers need to give up roughly 15% of their salary while scavengers only need to give up about 4-5%). As far as supplies and equipment go, scavengers are trained to make their equipment last on their long missions, they rarely ever need replacement weapons.

Recruitment

Recruitment for the Scavenger corps happens completely autonomously. Scavengers get TV appearances, are often hired as poster boys (or girls) and are generally seen as national heroes. Many look up to them and aspire to become one.

History

Scavengers are only known to have been deployed as a combat unit in the battle for apex-122 (as only they could withstand the extremely hazardous environment of the dwarven R&D department) and the battle for the former statonian empire. They were scouts there but due to their intention of being deployed against wildlife, they woefully underperformed in the war. However, every time the immortals set up a new base on a planet with an atmosphere, scavengers are deployed to gather intel against native threats.

Historical loyalties

Scavengers were originally a mercenary unit made up of cutthroat mercenaries hired by the settlement civilians. Sadly it was only after the high death rates that it was decided a special unit had to be set up for this exact purpose. They were adopted as an official military force but kept the name and relative independence.
