Storming

Storming is the rare Gifted Power that allows its user to create and control storm aspects. Many countries have placed restrictions on it due to side effects of its use.
It's beautiful, isn't it? Look at it. The wind, the rain, everything moves together, separate yet matched, different yet the same. Isn't it perfect?

Effect

Stormers can create storms and control them to a certain degree. When Storming first emerged, it was widely considered to be one of the strongest Gifted powers. Stormers could not only create massive thunderstorms but could direct them where they wanted and even pull aspects of them to be used as weapons. Powerful Stormers could wield lightning like a rope or a sword, create hail and rain that couldn't be controlled by Aquacity or Icing, and use wind to fly.   At some point within the last few centuries, Stormers began to fade into the masses of Gifteds. Many countries relegated them to outposts to protect cities from major storms and Storming houses disappeared into obscurity. While some countries, particularly in Bazilia and Imbowge, still hold Stormers in high regard, most consider them as just regular Gifteds: powerful but nothing special.

Side/Secondary Effects

Stormers exhibit most normal Downside symptoms, particularly mood swings and emotional loss or

detachment. Sometime in the 1600s, before Stormers' political power faded, an additional side effect of the power was discovered. Stormers who attempted to create storms could lose themselves in the sheer power they commanded, turning into silent, motionless statues who stared calmly up at the raging storm without a care in the world. Often, these Stormers either lost control of the storm without a single reaction or were killed by those trying to stop them. Some stories claimed that the most powerful Stormers who lost themselves disappeared into the clouds and were never found. Once this was discovered, Storming families began to restrict what their children could do in an effort to protect them. Their rulers supported them, allowing Stormers to fade away from society.

Manifestation

As an elemental power, Storming is usually visible to the naked eye. The wind picks up or changes direction, the air temperature shifts, and the humidity often increases as the Stormer begins to use their power. If the Stormer is controlling an already formed storm, the wind changing is usually the main sign. It is rare for Storming to be used without notice.

Discovery

Storming was discovered sometime close to the Dark Years, possible during the later part of that time period along with Healing or Earthing. It is usually listed as being discovered around 750-700 BEA.

Applied Restrictions

Unlike many Gifted powers, Storming is more restricted. In Whirlan and Tierhal, Stormers are quickly sent to Warden Outposts to be trained how to move storms and are kept carefully monitored. Some countries have no restrictions whatsoever, and in countries like Dalirn it is outlawed altogether like all
Gifted powers.

The Power of Storms

Orson Calvin Donovan of Ekrecht is currently believed to be the most powerful Stormer in the world. Manifesting his power at age four, the young boy grew rapidly familiar with its inner workings. After spending many of his teenage years in a secluded monastery near Barraken, Orson returned to his noble family and integrated smoothly into court politics. Despite his time spent alone, his social skills were surprisingly good and he made friends and allies easily. One of his closest friends was the crown prince, who preferred to keep him close.   A few years after Orson's return, the king of Ekrecht died suddenly and Prince Aaron inherited the throne with barely any preparation. Desperate for help, the prince turned to Orson, the only person who stuck by his side. Orson took over the prince’s schedule, prioritizing matters of stability over the issues other nobles raised. He managed basic affairs as well, leaving the new king time to handle more important matters. Other nobles were jealous and attempted to start a rebellion, which Orson led a small garrison of loyal troops to disband. During the short battle, he earned the title “Stormblade” because he created a weapon out of lightning. No Stormer had managed such a feat since the 1600s. Orson returned to the capital in glory and was granted the position of the king's advisor. He is now the second most powerful man in Ekrecht.

Author's Notes

I had to wait on my artist a bit, but I'm very happy with how everything came out! I think I might write an article about Orson Donovan, I like the idea of his character.
