In the year of 1491, Mark was afflicted by a magical curse (in this case, a cursed Mantle of Cailleach Bhéara, a mighty stag's head, cleaved and hollowed into a hat), causing him to lose his mind and attempt dark magics to extend an eternal winter. This same curse twisted his body, giving him enormous goat like legs. He was thwarted in his attempts, and freed from the dark designs that overtaken him by a group of adventurers sent out by Ser Carradin. He now resides in the The Temple of Erathis in Saltmarsh, sent there by Ser Carradin in the hopes of a cure for his affliction.

Personal history
Mark had always been a bit of a recluse, living alone in a cabin higher up the mountainside from Ambershandy. While renowned for being gruff and withdrawn before, he was known for the carved toys he made for the children of Ambershandy during the Greengrass festival.

Currently, finding a cure, or finding his way forwards, from the after effects of the curse that afflicted him is all that guides Mark's motivations.

Living alone never made Mark especially good at personal hygiene, moving to The Temple of Erathis has helped significantly with this, but he still has a brilliantly unkempt beard.

Withdrawn, and particularly antisocial, Mark never socialised well with his fellow villagers. Although his recent condition has surprisingly made him more outgoing.

No one in Ambershandy is particularly rich, but Mark was definitely in the lower rungs of their settlement, having deliberately isolated himself. His entire life was in his cabin high above Ambershandy, and all of that was lost when it burned down and then was buried beneath an avalanche.
