Camp Leos
While the might of the Kingdom of Owenar lies in its navy, its infantry still earns considerable respect for its strategic land defenses. One of these defenses is a large military encampment located on the western cliffs, known as Hunter's Edge by the native Harengon. Across from the cliffs is a short stretch of water that leads to the Hollow Canton Peninsula, marked by a vast network of burnt stone caused by the dragons that once ruled Westenra. The purpose of their burning remains unknown. However, it has since served as a hideout for the Hollow Syndicate, a criminal organization always scheming to create discord among the populace. With the only land connection shielded by the toxic fumes of the Scorched Forest, linking it to Westenra, the kingdom decided that the best means of observing the peninsula and the Saliferous Ocean was to maintain the outposts used by the Harengon. One of these was expanded into a training camp for the kingdom's infantry. If you seek to earn a place on land instead of at sea, you will be assigned as a soldier in training at this camp. Some of the greatest warriors in Ixala have trained at this location, many of whom aspired to greater heights and became heroes throughout Ixala.
Demographics
The demographics closely align with those of the military. Predominantly Human with a mixture of mortal races of Elves, Dwarves, and others. However, a third of the settlement is housed by the native Harengon (rabbit-humanoids). As the original settlers, they hold mutual ownership of the region with the Royal House of Owenar. This created a civil bond between the two factions compared to Arcshire, where there is disdain towards the rabbit race. During the raids of the Hollow Syndicate and the Salted Steel Tribe, many of the soldiers there told stories of Harengon saving their lives and fighting alongside them through thick and thin. The bond between races is rare and has served them well. The infantry in this camp is structured around a military hierarchy, where officers receive more accommodations than non-officers. While this may create disparity among the ranks, elements like camaraderie and the inspiration drawn from past heroes make it less noticeable. Notable stories include that of Edgar the Burning, who defeated the leader of the Hollow Syndicate, and Lorath Valceran and Azarune who became war heroes in the Second Salted Steel War and were trained at the camp. Giving the soldiers of the camp a sense of pride in following their footsteps
Government
As part of the Owenarian military, Camp Leos follows a strict governance policy. Under the Infantry-Commander, selected by the monarchy, the officers assume authority over all who reside in the area. The only other authority that overwrites these ranks is the monarch of the Kingdom. The native Harengon acts as hosts for the use of the settlement. They organize officer meetings, survey and monitor the land, and help the soldiers with catering and construction. During elections, every individual is required to cast their vote for candidates for parliamentary or judge positions in the Kingdom's capital. The kingdom's constitution grants all individuals in the territories the same rights as other citizens. When violations, such as murder or thievery, are found in the camp, the officers make a court case, the defendant is given the right to declare their defense with the aid of an officer, and judgment is passed by either the Infantry-Commander or the second-in-command.
Defences
As a military encampment, its defense isn't taken lightly. The training grounds were deliberately designed to be located in the south because it had the most strategic advantage for a ground invasion. The barriers and obstacles, such as trenches, pits, and walls, help disrupt enemy formations and provide a defensive advantage through familiarity. The defenses on the eastern side are primarily naval or observational. The scout ships below the cliffs cannot fully withstand a naval invasion due to their limited armaments, but the Harengon's tower can see vast distances with a large telescopic machine of their design called the "Rabbit's Eye." It can warn the kingdom easily within time for a defense. This is done by the machine's ability to cast an intense beacon using any source of light. One may find it difficult to attack the camp successfully, let alone get past the treelines or the vast ocean.
Infrastructure
Camp Leos is a compact camp, heavily organized, a mile in length/width, and is efficiently positioned for maximum defense against a land invasion. Situated on the western cliffsides of Westenra, the camp consists of military tents used for housing, storage, catering, and training. Most tents accommodate up to 50 men, while a select few are large enough to store an entire warship. The southern region of the camp is designated for armed combat training, where both officers and non-officers hone their skills. In the eastern area, small clay huts and a stone tower form a Harengon outpost that observes the Hollow Canyon Peninsula and the Saliferous Sea running between them. The huts are spacious enough to shelter a family of 10 or store sufficient goods to survive the winter. The officers' tents are clustered in the northern region, where accommodations are more privileged. These tents house fewer men but offer more personal storage space.
Assets
The Infantry's military equipment is centralized in the center of the camps. Its use is strictly for combat or basic training. The Harengon maintain their own supply of weaponry in the stone tower. Most equipment consists of blades and armor for hand-to-hand combat, artillery for naval attacks against ships, and basic fortifications against siege weaponry. Below the cliff are a few patrol ships for monitoring the seas in case something tries to cross from the Hollow Canyon Peninsula. The Harengon equip themselves with blades and armor, but they are also the camp's archery with their Scorchwood Bows. Difficult to craft with the toxic fumes, but deadly effective in poisoning their arrows. Along with this, the Harengon use climbing equipment that they share with the Owenarians for traverse the cliffs.
History
Before Humanity arrived, when dragons ruled the continent, the Harengon settled on the cliffs of Westenra and established a small outpost to observe the Hollow Canyon Peninsula. Their Hollow Syndicate had raided their homes since they first appeared in the Dark Ages, and so the Harengons sought to defend their territory by catching them before they reached their homes. When King Utheos came to the region in 577 DA, he respected their autonomy and refused to act against their independence. As a sign of gratitude, the chief of the Harengon signed a treaty with the Kingdom of Owenar. The region would have military stations as long as the natives accepted them as hosts. In 579 AD, the area known as Hollow's Watch, named for its stone tower, was converted into a military encampment for the training of the kingdom's infantry. The Kingdom recognized the threat endangering the Harengon and swore to defend the region against the Hollow Syndicate alongside them.
Throughout after the Dark Ages (DA), and through the centuries of the After Dark Ages (ADA), the encampment has expanded to house and train most of the kingdom's infantry. Many notable fighters have come and gone throughout its history. In 82 AD, Captain Leon August was the first to warn of a naval attack from the Salted Steel Tribe long before their arrival, giving Queen Lauren Owenar enough time to prepare a navy in retaliation. This deed led to the camp being named after Leon in his honor. In 367 ADA, a band from the Hollow Syndicate attacked the camp in the dead of night, resulting in the deaths of many soldiers. During that battle, a bold and reckless soldier known as "Edgar the Burning" defeated the band leader with a flaming sword that burned both him and his enemy. In 974 ADA, Talon Owenar, the twin brother of King Argon II, gathered a small army to the Scorchwood Forest in the north to hold back an invasion. Rumors circulated among the Harengon that Talon was seen in the Hollow Canyon. He was suspected of seeking favor with the syndicate or seeking something in the dangerous parts of the region. Such allegations have been disputed. In 980 ADA, the camp suffered a siege from the Salted Steel Tribe, who managed to overrun the camps and kill many of the Harengon afterward. The camp was quickly liberated by the combined forces of Lorrath Valceran by land and Elbion Stormmoon by sea. After thousands of losses, their armies crushed the tribe's occupation and secured a decisive victory in the Second Salted Steel War. A victory that earned both of these men as war heroes. The camp has been under repair and recovery to this day, but still stands strong with its defense for any future attack
