New Caratha
The elusive inhabitants of the Aracan Forest go by many names; Fanun by the Borians and Cyrah, Aracani by the Felmorans, and Cathik by the Vulshik. These terms are not those that belong to a formally recognized people, but a mythical race of strange and alien creatures. They are written into legends across the Isle, taking on a variety of shapes and roles, though almost always antagonistic to the heroes and peoples that cross their paths.
These beings have their own names for themselves as well, but as a group call themselves the Myradim. They claim to be the servitors of an ancient empire that once stretched across much of Isyra. In the Times Before they were at war with the peoples of the Isle, but after a great war they were scattered to the winds, seeking shelter in the dark depths of Therosol's forests. Enclaves formed in many wild places across the Isle, but many of those in the Aracan Forest would come together to form New Caratha.
Following the mandates of their former masters, these self-proclaimed Carathans view themselves as the inheritors of the ancient Carathan Empire. They gather far-flung Myradim Enclaves to their hidden settlements within the Aracan Forest, make new arms and armor, and prepare to reassert their strength against the humans who rebelled against the old order. Many opposed factions within New Caratha spar over philosophical and social differences however, endangering their dreams of reclaimed glory.
Structure
New Caratha is headed by their king. The majority of their politics and culture however is controlled by a large, militaristic enclave comprised of Nebufae and Darufae. Known as the Aradel, the enclave centers around the renewed bonds between the Nebu and Daru in ceremonial marriages, with lineages presiding over different aspects of New Caratha's governance. Each of the Aradel families retain a seat in the Fellowship of Enclaves, which votes in a king following the death of the current monarch. Other enclaves that join New Caratha willingly are given one seat at the Fellowship as well, though the Aradel far outnumber them.
New Caratha itself relies heavily on the existing structure of the Myradim enclaves in order to function. Each enclave is a complex web of family bonds and friendships, where honor and respect is earned through action. Those who do the most, and benefit the enclave the greatest, are often selected to lead it. Most enclaves have many leaders who govern by consensus.
The king of New Caratha enforces the laws and customs of the Fellowship, holds complete control of the standing Carathan army, and sits in judgment of major disputes. The Fellowship chooses the king, creates customs and laws, and controls the Tribunal. Beneath them, enclaves are expected to govern and police themselves.
Public Agenda
New Caratha is an expansionist power, seeking to bring all Faer enclaves under their control. The fledgling kingdom is looking to reclaim the lost glories of the fabled Carathan Empire from which their peoples are said to have descended.
Military
The Army of New Caratha stands on the traditions of their ancient forbearers. Armed with either short swords or falx, tall shields, and short spears, their heavily armored infantry bristle in tight formations. Archers and slingers accompany these, often the spouses or children of the soldiers. All of those who are given arms and armor are rigorously trained by veterans. They are taken away from their enclaves when they enter the King's service, broken down, and built back up in the image of warriors. What is left is a military enclave devoted entirely to the King, honor, and the expansion of their empire.
Apart from the infantry and auxiliaries, many enclaves and wealthy families hold their own warrior bands. They lack the resources and training of the army, but hold unique fighting styles and traditions that often go overlooked. These free warriors serve where their loyalties lie, but can be called into service by their King should the need arise. A few free warriors even go so far as to join ranks in secret, forming their own enclaves which profit off of their skills beneath the notice of the New Carathan leadership.
