Goldscale
Feykith which live on the Reman island of Kroceus frequently develop the condition known as goldscale. This consition is immediately identifiable by the yellowing of the affected individual's skin on the face, hands, and feet as well as the reduction or even total loss of color from the hair and eyes. Individuals experiencing goldscale develop a unique resistance to numerous toxic substances, and in fact there are many who consider goldscale a gift but there are consequences. These individuals become more sensitive to sunlight, resulting in frequent sunburns and impaired vision, and there's evidence that long-term goldscale leads to respiratory issues.
Despite this many both among the local feykith and across the Reman Empire believe goldscale beneficial, likely due to the numerous frequently-encountered, toxic substances which are rendered harmless by the condition. Several Reman physicians have traveled to Kroceus to study goldscale and determine if its beneficial effects can be replicated while reducing or eliminating harmful side effects. While there have been no successes to date, several do persist in the belief that a goldscale-derived treatment could be used to treat toxicity in both feykith and other peoples alike.
What has been determined by this research is the origins of the condition. Indeed Goldscale's name reveals its source, as it was named for the golden snapper which are one of the most common fish caught and consumed in the region. These fish derive their coloration from the saffrus algae they eat, which builds up as an oil in their bodies. This oil, when consumed in large quantities by feykith, reacts with the elemental animus within them to cause goldscale. Heat from cooking seems to have no effect on the oil, however the oil does break down quickly once the fish is dead. Numerous methods have been tested for their ability to preserve this oil for transport beyond the confines of the immediate area, but none have been effective.
Reman alchemists are now attempting to cultivate the saffrus algae and golden snapper in captivity near Rema Prime, but to date there have been no successes.
There are clims that the Adventi have greater knowledge regarding goldscale, regarding both its use and long-term effects, but efforts to broker a scientific exchange of knowledge have met with failure.
