Ursarin

Language of the Ursakin

This language belongs to a people in the world that resemble powerful beasts from the mountains and northern reaches of the world, it seems to share some vocal similarities with the Gnoll language but the Ursarin language is devoid of high pitches and sharp sounds. Speakers of this language are almost exclusively members of the Ursakin race but they seem to be able to use it to communicate simple ideas to other bears and bearlike creatures but it is a one-way communication. The script of this language was originally created by smearing the paw with ink, blood, or some other staining substance and then making a print that has different traits based upon their paw position.   The earliest appearance of this language was their script which was discovered long before the race themselves was, due to their reclusive and tribal nature their writings were found in many caves throughout the Spine of Kallex. Many explorers assumed the markings belonged to some sort of earlier race that had long since died out, this assumption continued for fifty years until the first Ursakin race was discovered and it wouldn't be until ten years later that peaceful contact would take place. The script of this language is often difficult to replicate with a pen or brush because the letters are meant to be large and details can be missed easily if they are replicated with letters smaller than a child's hand. This aspect of the language makes it inefficient for writing letters or placing on small parchments, in Ursakin Culture most correspondence is done through a messenger that bears a parchment or scroll with the pawprint of the sender. The vocal component of this language sounds like the strong roars, growls, and grunts of bears, most common conversations sound incredibly aggressive when spoken by two native speakers. This language is replicable by other species but they usually require training to drop their natural tone and volume restriction in favor of replicating the volume and intensity necessary to become fluent speakers. This language has a small presence in the world because it is rather unpopular for study among most academic circles and because Ursakin societies are often nomadic or reclusive with little desire for interaction with large civilizations.   The advantages of speaking this language would be that it is an immediate way to distinguish a bear from an Ursakin if you are confused, bears respond quizzically and often halt while Ursakin will stand fully and converse if they are hailed in their own language. This can often be the deciding factor between an ambush or a conversation with these powerful people. The vocal component of this language appears to be the one that is learned most often by those that study Ursakin but the written language is quickly pushed aside by most due to its inefficiency because of size constraints that are necessary to properly replicate the script. This language has an interesting side effect, most other races that belong to the Animal Kingdom feel anxiety and nervousness upon hearing the native language of the Ursakin and it seems to be tied back to an instinct that identifies them as an apex predator.

Really interesting history behind this language - I like the fact it was discovered before wider knowledge of the race.
