Heehaw

Hero of Harkin

The bray of a donkey echoes over the fray as the battling Adventurers pause for a moment, watching a battered donkey race through enemies while a disheveled rider throws flaming tarts and pastries from a bag on his hip. With every successful hit, the donkey laughed, his sound bolstering those who were still fighting. For any onlookers, this would be considered an odd sight, but the townsfolk of Harkin knew the sound and the rider well, their little hometown heroes, no matter how unconventional their tactics.   Sunlight filters through the boards of the wagon, awaking the donkey and rider for another day, another job. One goes to sit by the fire while the other stokes the oven in the worn-down wagon to begin their actual duty. Within the hour, the smell of fruit pies and other delicacies wafts over the town, drawing guards, merchants, and others to the otherwise out-of-place makeshift market stall.   While the sight of donkey and rider has confused many, those who call Harkin home know them for what they truly are: Kamina and Heehaw, heroes of the town and sellers of the best pastries and snacks around. No one quite knows where they came from or how they set their sights on this small town in the Human Empire, but from the moment they arrived, they brought adventure and full bellies.

Personal history

Heehaw was born as a runt and was quickly sold off from the farm on which he was born, but this is not something Kamina talks about much. How the donkey ended up in Kamina's possession is questionable at best and leaves a lot to the imagination, but it is known that Kamina was not Heehaw's first owner. The two came together when Heehaw was roughly five years old, gaining a new name and an unconventional path to fame.   The unlikely duo traveled the Human Empire, Kamina teaching the donkey all sorts of tricks, including riding headlong into situations where neither of them had any right to be. Using a grappling hook, the two learned to make hairpin turns and move faster than the average donkey. It was a relationship built on trust and a whole lot of luck.   Soon, the idea of Kamina's Food Cart was born, and the two continued their travels with a wagon in tow, stopping to feed the people wherever Kamina thought he could make a quick buck. Some saw the cart as a scam and would run the duo out of town when the prices were posted. This did not deter them as they continued traveling, selling pastries when they could and helping others when the situation arose.   Kamina says he doesn't remember how they fell in with the group that would eventually save Harkin from a Goblin invasion, but he would remember that Heehaw was the reason they were successful. To anyone that would listen, he would tell the story of how, with a grappling hook, he turned the donkey at full speed, right before Heehaw dropped his head and barreled through a horde of Goblins, trampling the Hobgoblin leader in the process.   With this story echoing across Harkin and in the minds of all the villagers, Kamina and Heehaw chose to set up their shop permanently in the village, selling pastries by day and fending off any intruders at night. Heehaw has been given his own stable and all the hay and oats he can eat as the hero who saved Harkin from a horrible demise.

The best part is that the intro actually happened in one of our campaigns. Kamina and Heehaw were very unforgettable PCs.
