Divine Crests

Crests of Purple Magic Users

A diadem of gold marked with the visage of a warhammer rests upon the head of an Ursakin in heavy armor, her claws burning bright with the power of her magic behind the tower shield she wields. As she speaks the divine words of a spell in her rough tongue, the diadem she wears flares a brilliant purple, the mark of her channeling Purple Magic as she fights against the creatures that stalk towards her outside the village. She says a quick prayer as her spell hits and she throws herself into the fray, fighting in the name of Crommel for those who cannot protect themselves.   Bracelets jingle on the wrists of a Dragonkin as he wanders between the beds of the infirmary, praying with those who wish and quickly healing those who writhe in pain. Each wrist holds six bracelets, one for each color of Dragon, one for each color of the Dragon God Kallex. He touches his brow as he speaks the words to heal a man injured while saving a caravan from unsavory sorts, the bracelets he wears shining purple as he does. With a nod and smile to the injured man, the Dragonkin continues on, healing others and offering words where he can.   Divine Crests are the items with which users of Purple Magic channel the divine, but they can come in all shapes and sizes. Acolytes may choose simple markings worn on bracelets or necklaces as they study to find their place among Purple Magic users, while Clerics or Paladins may have the symbol of their god engraved in their weapons or armor. All who answer to the divine for their magic make their choice of Divine Crest, dedicating their lives to the god whom they serve.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Divine Crests are not magical items by any means. In most instances, these items are nothing more than mundane items that have been marked with the symbol of a specific god and then blessed by a Priest or other clergy member of that god. These crests are not meant to harness or hold any type of magic, but are a way in which users of Purple Magic can channel their divine powers. Having an item blessed in the name of one's chosen god opens a channel that allows the user to dip into Purple Magic, one that is only open for those in good standing with their chosen deity.

History

The history of Divine Crests and their first appearance is murky, as these are not items used by the Divine Races, and each of the Elder Races claims that they were the first to utilize Divine Crests due to divine items gifted to one of their members by their chosen god. With that being said, it is most often accepted that the Humans were the first to utilize Divine Crests, as the first example of one was the divine axe Damascus.   No matter where Divine Crests originated, it became known quickly that those who wished to utilize Purple Magic required an object blessed in the name of their god to channel the magic. The first recorded common Divine Crests were nothing more than weapons marked with the hammer of Crommel used by the Dwarves, but other races created Divine Crests of items other than weapons.   In the current day, it is believed that any item can be utilized as a Divine Crest, but some criteria must be met. The item in question must be blessed in the name of the chosen god; it is more helpful if said item has meaning to the wielder, and nearly any item can be used, but the more obscure items must have ties to the god in question. For example, metal bracelets can be used, but may need to correspond to certain colors or metals depending on the god. Gods of War often prefer weapons and armor, while Gods of Knowledge may prefer jewelry or other simple items.

I love the idea of purple magic users being able to channel through any object as long as it is blessed.
