Personal history
Asguir Thornveil was born into a lower class family in the rougher edges of Krolask, the capital of Vashnir. Though his family tried to get him an education and closer to a “proper life”, Asguir was brought into petty crime and theft, par for the course with poverty in the cities. Thankfully it never developed past shoplifting and pickpocketing, and these were all honourable in his mind - tipping the balance back into his family’s favour while other’s consumed in decadence.
As he grew older, Asguir’s sneaky nature and dexterous hands combined with a sturdy physique led him to join the military at a young age amidst the start of the War of the Eastern Front. His stealth did not go unnoticed by his commanders, who trained him to become a scout and later an assassin as his skillset grew increasingly adept. He was a valued member of the military through the rest of the war. After the Battle of the Crossroads and the end of the war, Asguir was seen as a hero among his battalion and was granted a special service medal and honours for his commitment to the cause and standing by his comrades. Stories were shared around the taverns of how Asguir had personally driven a dagger into Skrungrat Black-Heart (who headed major raids on the Raveshan trade lines) and most notably scouted out the locations of the 3 Brothers (the high orc commanders of the Eastern armies), allowing for ambushes that heavily aided in the victory for the West. Standing amongst his battalion in the city of Rinto, he finally met King Aldathar III, who had taken up the crown and fought alongside his soldiers in the midst of the bloodshed but had never crossed paths with the young assassin of Krolask. If only he’d known how his luck would turn in the coming years…
Asguir was returning home from the a late poker night while on leave when he saw an old friend being haggled in the streets. He was a Raveshan tabaxi who was fierce with an axeblade but had put on some weight since they had last met. Two dark cloaked figures were cornering him in an alleyway and conversing in hushed tones. He caught the words “It’s just a damned myth I havnae an idea where i’ is.” Instincts on high alert, he tried to step between them when they knocked him back with a magical force and, with efficiency and fervour, sliced his comrade’s neck open then slipped into the shadows. Asguir was left in an alley trying to staunch the flow of his poor friend’s blood as it poured down his fur and paws. He was arrested the next day and taken to trial, where strange evidence appeared that came out of nowhere to Asguir: stolen assets from the government, letters giving confidential info to crime gangs and hits on high ranking officials. He was being framed and only he knew it. Despite his innocence, Asguir was dishonourably discharged for treason and jailed.
The long, cold nights in those stone cells were devastating, and Asguir racked his brain for how this could have happened. After a few weeks, he hatched an escape plan and lived in hiding amongst the alleys of Krolask, utilising his assassin’s skillset to thieve and brawl, as well as working as a vigilante and stopping serious crime himself. He somehow evaded the law and survived. Eventually though he pushed his luck too far by angering the local thieves’ guild the Red Fist and had to escape from Krolask in the back of a farmer’s wagon after a rooftop chase and a crossbow bolt to the bicep. He awoke in the wilderness, straw stuck in his hair like an animated scarecrow, stumbling out of the wagon with the sun’s glare in his eyes, he found himself in a small hamlet that he’d later find out was called Sareth - a military encampment turned farming village. It was far removed from the narrow sidewalks of the city, but it’d do. He booked a room with his remaining coin and that was where he’d stay until he became part of a guild of adventurers who would fight chaos itself for the world’s sake.
