A rebellion began 300 years before the events of The Scream, culminating in rebel Slyth engineering a plague that would be dropped on loyalist worlds. Originally target to be carrier by others, and only infectiously transmitted to lethality in the royal line, the genegineered virus mutated and soon spread to all Slyth.

The Terran Mandate falls due to corruption by its interior ministers and its over-reliance on advanced AI.
Thirteen organizations find themselves as the controlling interests of the emergent Tenebrian Empire, named after the informal agreement sworn between themselves on the Tenebrae space station. Although nominally allied, they begin to squabble for influence and command of the throne.

Work begins on the Rubicon. A device that will allow Piggen with strong MES abilities to transcend their physical existence for one within Metaspace and the leylines (the Metaspace highway for lack of a better way to describe it). The Rubicon will require the sacrifice of non-MES Piggen to energize the device and maintain the stability of the leylines through this process

The horrible truth of the Rubicon begins to be leaked to the public. Piggen Mages and Shamans create the rumor of the virus affecting the core worlds. A brutal campaign to suppress information is undertaken. Travel to and from the core worlds are heavily restricted.
