Vendic Solestein
Vendic Solestein is the leader of the former rebel movement on Acastus. He and his chosen peoples have remained wary of Ash City, seeing it go from control of a corrupt city government, to The Still Lady, and now to strangers from offworld in the Greystar Confederation.
They have elected to remain in the Solestein Resistance Encampment, and have recently struck up a lukewarm friendship with Eisheru Tidecaller.
In December 2667 Vendic hung himself in his hab, the first night he and his people settled in Marmora. He wrote one final letter to Eisheru, shortly before the deed. It is reproduced below.
Eisheru, my friend.
By the time you read this I will have gone on to greener pastures. I have led my people through the darkness of the old Acastan plutarchy, the tyranny of The Still Lady, and now, through this uncertain new phase of the Greystar years.
I have worked hard to shepherd my people well and our continued survival is testament to the sagacity of the choices my lieutenants and I have made over the years.
I look upon this new city, and see my people now filling its streets. I think of the land left behind, rough encampment it was. We now have running water, reliable power, sanitary conditions, and amusement, and I cannot shake the feeling that despite all this, I have allowed my soul to be gambled away for it.
I do not want you to feel personally responsible for this. You will be a good steward to these people, as I was. I am now captain of a rudderless ship, and when there is no direction, it is not uncommon to be dashed upon the rocks.
I have no desire to endure that, and I do not what my people to have seen that. I move into the afterlife with honor, leaving behind a happy people under the guidance of a man who cares hopefully as much as I have.
