The system of Kora is centered around a dying yellow sun, still several million years from its eventual supernova. There is one planet just outside the habitable zone where a terraform effort was focused just before The Scream. The system also has a barren icy world at the system edge.
This effort to terraform Kora- 1 has failed as vital technology was destroyed during the disaster. The locals have taken to worshipping the old terraforming machine wrecks left behind, and in some cases it seems human sacrifice has even been offered to them to try to get the machines to activate once again. Superstition and barbarism have replaced progress and intelligence on this world.
This world went largely ignored until March 2670 when Greystar agent Groshim took the plight of the natives here to heart and at great risk snuck into the terraforming crawler to enact repairs. Working with what was on hand, Groshim was able to adjust the terraformer to cover the western settlements of this planet. It will be several months before the changes in the weather pattern work themselves out, but now several more communities have a chance at survival.
Agent Groshim also discovered a civilization of mechanical protectors on the east side of the planet. These protectors are charged with protecting a subterrain lab and technology vault where a machine virus called "Destructor" is loose. This virus melds flesh and metal and infects those who come in contact with it causing biomechanical mutations, hyperviolent personality changes, and an erasure of a sense of self preservation. The personalities of the infected are erased, replaced with nothing but a blinding rage. The protectors stringently enforce their quarantine and have pledged to pay the Greystar Confederation back in kind for a recent supply drop once the danger is eradicated.
In March 2671 the Greystar explorer Groshim completed the arduous task of finding pretech components among the stars and restored the operations of the terraforming device. Known as the "Temple of the Rainmaker" by the locals, this device has transformed the planet from a barren and dry wasteland to a temperate , verdant world that is on the mend.
Kora's Occupants
:
There are three main types of inhabitants on Kora
The first group is multiple tribes of Tech level 1 natives. They as a group do not speak mandate however some have been observed to speak at least some mandate, possibly speaking to an aborted uplift project in the past. They appear wary of outsiders as a whole and caution should be taken on initial approach.
The second group consists of small settlements of Mandate speaking natives. The settlements are tech level 4 however the scream destroyed their industrial base so they are forced to resort to scavenging to maintain their equipment and are slowly backsliding.
The third and final group are a race of machine intelligences. These beings are using tech level 5 equiptment however their supplies of such appear to be running thin and the majority of the arms and equipment used by them appear to be tech level 4 to preserve resources.
Locations of interest:
Temple of the Rainmaker
Located at the southmost island of the world the Temple is the Teraformer that is keeping the world as alive as it is. The Teraformer is located near a tribe of non mandate natives whom worship the Teraformer and frequently make sacrifices to it. The surrounding area is almost tropical due to proximity to the teraformer and as such wildlife can be found in abundance including possibly unique varieties.
Protector Compound
The ruin to the North East is home to the protectors. They reside only on this island where they fulfill their purpose of maintaining a quarantine zone against a nanoplague. The protectors will respond with lethal force towards attempts to breach the quarantine but are willing to communicate with those who respect the boundaries set.
Tribe Inhabited City
: The ruin in the center of the planet is the remains of one of Kora's Cities. A few thousand of the non mandate natives reside in the ruins at least some of which appear to have interacted with Mandate natives in the past. The city appears to once have been rather rich with businesses specializing in high fashion and other novelties as well as a hq of a lucrative company.
Industrial Center
: The Ruins to the south east contain an industrial center that was acquired for Greystar by Groshim. In addition there is a vault in this area containing unknown valuables including pretech parts. This vault's contents have been claimed by the company employees guarding it whom have been friendly to this point.
Oasis:
The southmost city has been abandoned after the scream however some of the citizens fled north and created a settlement in the mountains by the name of Oasis. They are decently armed and armored but having troubles maintaining said gear. They also have issues with large predators in the area as well as resource scarcity sufficient to require every able hand to work if they wish to remain in the settlement.
Desolate City:
The city at the centre of the planet has fallen into ruins like many of the others however further inspection reveals that this city faced worse than many of the others. It appears that during the aftermath a large segment of people fell into savagery and became raiders or bandits, looting and killing rampantly. A community shelter was discovered with all who fled there murdered and their valuables stolen. It is unclear what has became of these bandits.
Farming Settlement: The northmost settlement has become a rural community, protected by rudimentary tech level 4 defenses. The settlement has adopted a harsh justice system to survive. Failure to pay the food tax results in shunning for yourself and your family.
