Anywhere peat is able to lie under heat and pressure, coal will form. The Iron Stars have no shortage of swampland capable of yielding this dirty but reliable fuel source. Most vehicles with the proper hydrocarbon fittings are capable of using the raw pellets as a fuel source. It is not uncommon for coal powered planes or ships to still be in use on some Tech Level 3 worlds.
