Worldember Prep 2025: The Gibborim and The Orcs

Written by DragonRaccoon

For my very first Worldember this year I am going to focus around 10,000 words, maybe up to 25,000 if I feel confident enough, on writing about the Gibborim and the Orcs. The Gibborim are effectively the Space Marines of my setting. Well, the closest analogue to Warhammer 40k Space Marines. They're not the only type of augmented super soldier humanity has. However, since these guys are kind of my poster boys for humanity alongside M.I.L.F. (The Missionary Interstellar Liberation Fleet, pretty much a much more expansive version of the Sororitas) and the Diaspora Militaries (pretty much Imperial Guard or other basic human armies). I feel like it would be a good idea to start with them for the humanity side of things. As for the Orcs, they're kind of self explanatory. Granted, I am still unsure if I'm just going to settle for calling them Orcs, calling them Gorgons, or find some other orky approximate of a name for their group. They're kind of like 40k Orks, but not exactly. They're more if Orks were the lovechild of sci-fi ape men like Planet of The Apes and the Supermutants from Fallout. Why am I doing two factions? Because I kind of want to make sure I get my ideas out for both Gibborim and Orcs since Space Marines vs Space Orcs is an iconic subject. Now then, time for the bingo!

My Bingo

Review or collect your world inspirations

Given this is heavily inspired by 40k with a couple more twists, its going to be a pretty heavy list. Granted I need to figure out the whole "collect all your inspirations in a single page" thing. Admittedly, I've always been a world builder for a long time. It's just recently that I've begun using this site for world building purposes. As to why I'm doing this now. It's mostly my reviving an old sci-fi setting I never really managed to flesh out, and incorporating ideas I've had for Warhammer 40k that don't really fit into the setting. (Can I do homebrew 40k in World Anvil?)

Moodboard!

I'm skipping the author thing because as a relative nobody I have no idea what to actually put on my author page. So I'm totally making a moodboard for myself to get a good vibe of what I want my setting to feel like.

Worldbuilding Playlist

As someone who always thinks up of stories and such when listening to music, this is absolutely for me. I've got a collection of songs I already associate with Iron Stars.

Worldbuilding Scope

My goal is to start fleshing out at least two factions in my setting, the Gibborim and Orcs. So I will be devoting my 25k words to starting out those guys.

Read a book

I have got plenty of books I need to start reading in all honesty instead of letting them collect dust on my shelves. I might read The Worlds of Dune by Tom Huddleston, and Rome and Persia: The Seven Hundred Year Rivalry by Adrian Goldsworthy. Why a book about Dune and a history book about Rome vs Persia? Because I felt like I needed to get to reading those two books. That and the latter will help me figure out how multi-century rivalries work for my setting.

Make an article of lists to write

I don't have an exact list, but here are some planned articles of mine.
  • Gibborim Gibborim History Gibborim Armory Gibborim Subfactions Orcs Orc History Orc Armory Orc Subfactions Orc Subspecies (as in Orcs, Goblins, Trolls, etc.)
And that's about all for planned articles atm. I will end up coming up with more article ideas the further I come along.

Writing Schedule

It's definitely not going to be a daily thing. Maybe every other day, but not every day. And I usually get to work on my stuff late at night, which I really need to change it up to earlier in the day since even my mother says my staying up late at night is no good for my focus along with other things.

What kind of people will you find in my worldbuilding area?

To put it lightly, it's a vast variety. You have the Gibborim, who are mostly seen as techno-barbarians by most of Diaspora society. They are considered at best noble savages, and at worst no different than others such as the Orcs. Speaking of the orcs, since they're basically Supermutant Ape Men, they're pretty much of a supremacist mentality. Naturally they think orcs are the best, ignoring the fact that they actually originate from a failed super soldier project gone out of control that puts the very species that the super soldiers were supposed to protect under subjugation.

Pre-Writing Research

I literally have no idea where to start researching. That is something I'm going to be relying on the community to help bounce ideas off of. What I do know is that I should really get into researching just what on earth do Gibborim use for guns. Gauss Rifles? Coilguns? Bolters? Regular Bullets? I'm sure I'll figure it out.
I am so excited to partake in my first Worldember this year. And I hope I manage to make a lot of good progress, and probably lots of socializing at the very best.
