This kit contains all the items necessary to perform basic, preliminary testing of unknown substances. It does not allow the testing or identification of alchemical or magical substances.
Testing a Light Bulk portion of a substance takes 1 hour, and destroys the sample (which cannot be recovered by any means). The results of the testing depend on the results of a Craft (Alchemy) check.
Type Lesser;
Level 1; Price 3 gp;
Critical Success: as per a success with a Chemical Testing Kit (Moderate).
Success: You determine the basic chemical reactions (uses in items level 4 and below, not including alloys of the substance), toxicity and basic statistics (hardness, hit points, etc) of the substance.
Failure: You determine the basic statistics of the substance.
Critical Failure: You waste the sample, learning nothing, and accidentally imbibe or intake some of the substance.
Success: You determine the basic chemical reactions (uses in items level 4 and below, not including alloys of the substance), toxicity and basic statistics (hardness, hit points, etc) of the substance.
Failure: You determine the basic statistics of the substance.
Critical Failure: You waste the sample, learning nothing, and accidentally imbibe or intake some of the substance.
Type Moderate;
Level 4; Price 10 gp;
This version of the Chemical Testing Kit requires a Sterling Alchemist's Toolkit or fixed alchemy lab to use, and requires 4 hours of work instead of 1.
Critical Success: as per a success with a Chemical Testing Kit (Greater).
Success: As per success with a Lesser kit, plus you determine the standard chemical reactions (uses in items level 11 and below, including alloys of the substance).
Failure: As per success with a Lesser kit.
Critical Failure: You waste the sample, learning nothing, and accidentally imbibe or intake some of the substance.
Critical Success: as per a success with a Chemical Testing Kit (Greater).
Success: As per success with a Lesser kit, plus you determine the standard chemical reactions (uses in items level 11 and below, including alloys of the substance).
Failure: As per success with a Lesser kit.
Critical Failure: You waste the sample, learning nothing, and accidentally imbibe or intake some of the substance.
Type Greater;
Level 11; Price 250 gp;
This version of the Chemical Testing Kit requires a fixed alchemy lab (with at least a +2 item bonus) to use, and requires 16 hours of work to use.
Critical Success: as per a success with a Chemical Testing Kit (Major).
Success: As per success with a Moderate kit, plus you determine the advanced chemical reactions (uses in items level 17 and below, including alloys of the substance), plus any magical qualities of the substance.
Failure: As per success with a Moderate kit.
Critical Failure: You waste the sample, learning nothing, and accidentally imbibe or intake some of the substance.
Critical Success: as per a success with a Chemical Testing Kit (Major).
Success: As per success with a Moderate kit, plus you determine the advanced chemical reactions (uses in items level 17 and below, including alloys of the substance), plus any magical qualities of the substance.
Failure: As per success with a Moderate kit.
Critical Failure: You waste the sample, learning nothing, and accidentally imbibe or intake some of the substance.
Type Major;
Level 17; Price 2500 gp;
This version of the Chemical Testing Kit requires a fixed alchemy lab (with at least a +3 item bonus) to use, and requires one week of Downtime work to use.
Critical Success: As per success, plus you make a breakthrough about the substance - discuss this with your GM.
Success: As per success with a Greater kit, plus you determine all chemical reactions (all uses in items of any level), plus any radiative qualities of the substance.
Failure: As per success with a Greater kit.
Critical Failure: You waste the sample, learning nothing, and accidentally imbibe or intake some of the substance.
Critical Success: As per success, plus you make a breakthrough about the substance - discuss this with your GM.
Success: As per success with a Greater kit, plus you determine all chemical reactions (all uses in items of any level), plus any radiative qualities of the substance.
Failure: As per success with a Greater kit.
