Shard Tower
The Shard Tower is the oldest continually occupied structure on Thauzuno and the single most symbolically loaded landmark in the megacity of Taz’Vaar. Constructed during the early-mid Reconstruction Era—between Ghraaldra 15, 1128 and Sharndra 29, 1190—it originally served as a fortified command spire for early syndicate warbands rebuilding in the centuries after the Fall. For nearly eight centuries it stood as an isolated power-bastion in the central Craehlil basin, its presence long predating the foundation of Taz’Vaar itself. Only with the city’s formal establishment as a megacity in Drift 1889 did the surrounding districts consolidate into the modern urban core, with the Shard Tower at its vertical center. Outlasting failed Syndicates, broken accords, and entire ideological cycles, the tower has stood for over twelve hundred years as the unbroken axis of governance on Thauzuno.
Built from layered ferrometal composites, ballistic-grade alloy spinework, and reinforced multi-phase glass, its survival is not mystical but the result of archaic overengineering at a scale no modern contractor would dare replicate. Its modular design allowed it to be repeatedly renovated and rearmed across centuries, wrapping into a spiraled obsidian-and-chrome façade that refracts skyglow and wind-signal over the skyline. Originally intended for defense coordination, its core housing later evolved into the default headquarters for every ruling Syndicate that has claimed Taz’Vaar since the city’s foundation.
Across history, the Shard Tower has functioned as the seat of no fewer than 19 recognized Syndicates, from the now-defunct Kavosh Guild to the brutalist Xarn Corporation, and most recently, the Ravvaar Syndicate. Despite regime changes, internal collapses, and full-scale wars, the structure has never been abandoned, decommissioned, or successfully besieged. Its interior remains fully reconfigurable: multi-vektral control spires, arbitration floors, surveillance nodes, and legacy vaults shift with each occupant. Since Volzhadra Drift 1711, every warlord has claimed the penthouse at the pinnacle as their residence, linked by sealed shafts to enforcement corridors and defense suites. Kael Ravvyn continues this tradition, presiding not from a throne but within a suspended data canopy at the tower’s apex.
To the population of Taz’Vaar, the Shard Tower is not mythic—it is inevitable. It is where Syndicates are sworn in, where contracts are ratified, and where warlords either die or vanish. Its silhouette defines the city’s center, visible from every district, its beacon-light the unofficial midnight marker. On Edge Days, its windows fall black. On the first Varek of each new Drift, the tower emits a single low-frequency pulse across the comm-band, syncing the city’s baseline. No announcements accompany it. It simply happens, as it always has. As the saying goes in the lower decks: “You don’t look up at the Shard. You look away first, so it doesn’t look back.”Shard Tower
