President of Mars

The President of Mars, officially the President of the Martian Republic, is the head of state and chief executive of the Republic of Mars. The president directs the executive branch of the federal government and serves as commander-in-chief of the Martian Armed Forces. The office was established under the Constitution of Mars on April 5, 2389, following the colony’s independence from Earth-based governance. The creation of the presidency marked the beginning of full political sovereignty for the Martian settler population, and the role has since evolved into the most prominent and influential political office on the planet. Article II of the Constitution of Mars, executive power in the president, includes responsibility for enforcing federal law, appointing ministers and judges, negotiating with foreign powers, commanding the armed forces, and guiding both domestic and interplanetary policy. The president shares legislative and policy duties with the Martian Parliament and the prime minister of Mars, and plays a central role in budgetary negotiations, legislative approval, and crisis leadership. Though the president is the ceremonial face of the Martian Republic, the office carries significant authority in both symbolic and functional terms.   The president is elected indirectly by the Electoral College of Mars to a four-year term, with the possibility of reelection under the limits imposed by the Tenth Amendment, which caps consecutive service at twenty years or five consecutive terms. A president who has reached the limit must wait one full term before seeking the office again. The office is headquartered in Olivia Turner House, located in the planetary capital of Xouis, and the president maintains membership in the Cabinet, the Martian Economic Council, and the Martian Security Council. Since the formation of the Martian Republic, 56 men and women have served 62 presidencies spanning 74 four-year terms. Erin Rebecca Samuels is the 56th and current president since January 23, 2725, becoming the first candidate in Martian history to secure 100% of both the popular and electoral vote.
