Attire and personal effects

Martin Gains is a man who takes pride in his appearance, both in and out of uniform. As the Chairman of the USC and a Fleet Admiral in the Navy, he always makes sure to dress professionally and appropriately for any occasion.   While on official duty, Gains can often be found wearing his service dress whites. He also wears various medals and ribbons that showcase his accomplishments throughout his military career. When not on official duty, Gains prefers to wear more casual attire. His go-to outfit consists of black trousers, a white button-up shirt, and a black leather jacket. On the left breast of his jacket is a patch displaying the Navy's sigil, Gains' name, and rank. He also has custom epaulettes on his shoulders that feature rank pins.   Gains is rarely seen without his signature aviator sunglasses. They are not just for fashion; they also provide protection against bright lights when navigating through space or during combat situations. In addition to his attire, Gains also has some personal effects that hold sentimental value to him. He always carries a small silver cross necklace given to him by his wife as a reminder of their faith and love for each other. He also has an old pocket watch passed down from his grandfather that he keeps in pristine condition.   As an avid reader and history enthusiast, Gains always has at least one book with him wherever he goes. Currently, he is reading "The Art of War" by Sun Tzu as he finds it helpful in understanding different strategies used in military operations.

Biography

Early life and education

Martin Jacob Gains was born on May 6, 2651, in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Earth. He was raised in a multigenerational military household with strict discipline, deep patriotism, and a storied family lineage tracing back to American naval service in the early 20th century. His father, Commander Lucas Gains Sr., served in the United Space Command and upheld an uncompromising code of honor both at home and aboard ship. Martin’s mother, Rebecca Roberts, was a devout Baptist and homemaker who instilled in him the moral compass and faith that would later become cornerstones of his leadership style. As the second of four children—and the eldest son—Martin bore both the expectation of excellence and the burden of legacy from an early age.   His early education took place in the public school system of Clark County, where he attended James Carter Middle School and later graduated from Las Vegas High School. Though a capable student, Martin struggled with emotional detachment and behavioral volatility after the murder of his father during Martin’s sophomore year. The trauma of losing his father—betrayed by a trusted friend over narcotics—left deep scars and nearly derailed his academic progress. He began skipping classes and withdrawing socially, retreating into history books and physical training as a coping mechanism. The turning point came during a routine career day in his junior year, when Naval Officer Jonathon Sellers—then a decorated combat strategist—delivered a passionate speech about duty, sacrifice, and redemption. Sellers saw something in Martin and took him aside afterward, speaking bluntly and personally. That moment, Martin would later recall, "was the day my path turned forward."   Motivated by Sellers’ example, Martin devoted his final year of high school to self-reform. He enrolled in additional coursework in American history, government, and physical science, while simultaneously volunteering at a local veterans' support center. Though his grades never fully recovered from the earlier slump, he graduated with recommendations from multiple instructors who noted his transformation into a quiet but driven young man. Rather than immediately attend a university, Martin enlisted in the USC Naval Academy Preparatory Program, where his leadership potential, moral fortitude, and physical fitness quickly drew attention. He was later granted an academic deferment to complete an officer-track education at New Washington D.C. Naval Academy, where he graduated third in his class with high marks in command theory, logistics, and battlefield ethics. From there, his meteoric rise through the Navy began.

    Traits & Personality

Martin Gains is a man of deep personal conviction, molded by both triumph and tragedy. His temperament is characterized by discipline, self-control, and quiet intensity. Rarely seen raising his voice, Gains commands with presence rather than volume. He believes that respect is earned through consistency and moral clarity, not intimidation or theatrics. This has made him an effective leader even among high-ranking officers and civilian authorities who may initially underestimate his calm demeanor. His Baptist faith is a core part of his identity, shaping not only his ethical outlook but also his leadership philosophy—he believes service is a sacred duty, not a career path. He often quotes scripture in private moments with subordinates and believes strongly in redemption, second chances, and the power of mentorship.   Strategically, Gains is methodical and unshakably rational, with a tendency toward long-form planning and contingency logic. He values preparedness over improvisation and is known for drawing up meticulous campaign simulations even for low-risk deployments. However, he is not rigid. Years of warfare taught him the value of adaptation, and while he rarely acts without analysis, he is capable of decisive and creative action when under pressure. He has a deep interest in game theory and historical military campaigns, which he studies not as curiosities but as case studies in human decision-making. Gains is often regarded as a “soldier’s admiral”—someone who not only understands tactics but also genuinely cares about the physical and psychological toll of warfare on the rank-and-file.   On a personal level, Martin Gains is private, reflective, and intensely loyal. His family remains his emotional anchor, and despite the enormity of his responsibilities, he is known to schedule quiet Sunday dinners, attend his grandchildren’s birthdays, and send handwritten letters to each of his children. He enjoys long walks, acoustic music, and reading nonfiction—particularly biographies and theological texts. Though widely respected, he is not immune to criticism; some peers view his traditionalism and stoicism as outdated in a rapidly evolving interstellar military environment. Nevertheless, Gains never compromises on what he believes to be right, even at great personal or political cost. His moral clarity, strategic brilliance, and unyielding sense of duty have earned him the respect of allies and adversaries alike—and a lasting legacy as one of the most principled leaders in the history of the United Space Command.
