The Bagman

The Devourer has a need for a workforce. However it has a tendency to lash out in rage at any failure to perform, often killing denizens of its realm. To solve this is has created the Bagmen. Having found one success in Bags of Devouring, the creature decided to take advantage of the Bags of Holding. Seeing as they were already occupying sections of the In-Between already, this was trivial for it. Through experimentation, training and some light magical torture, the Bagmen were created.   The Bagmen are a race of once humanoid beings, bent by the Devourers magic and the strain of constant travel into and out of the In-Between. They wander the multiverse using Bags of Holding as random portals.     Bagmen have a deal with the Devourer. If they can find their home, they are free. In exchange for this chance and for the power to traverse the slipholes and Bags, they must bring back a living being from each venture out into the universe as payment. Not many are keen to sign up, and the ones who have have been warped and twisted. The exposure to the dimensional rifts into and out of the In-Between has pros and cons. Bagmen quickly stop aging, and their form becomes more fluid, able to change more easily. The act of crawling into and out of a small hole is enough to begin stretching them out and make them more "collapsible". They tend to grow claws from their fingers, used for both aiding in pulling themselves out and as a defense against unwilling recruits. The magic of the multiverse permeates them, making thought into reality, if ever so slowly. Some begin to ooze an ichor from their hands, a sedative to knock out victims. Some gain cage like torsos to trap victims and prevent escape. There are numerous mutations, all depending on what the individual Bagman thinks would be helpful.   Unfortunately for the Bagmen, the portals out are at random, making the chance of finding home nearly impossible at best. Some have forgotten what home is at this point, and are simply repeating what is familiar for eternity.    There are only a handful of Bagmen that still operate. These few are likely to be revered as if they were high priests by any knowledgeable denizen of the In-Between.
