Known Region
Griffins are usually found in the Aurelian Peaks, far up on the sheer cliffs that make up the mountainside. Occasionally they are able to be found in the Skyhearth Cliffs, closer down the valley to the sea. Thunder Griffins, the larger of the subspecies are able to be found somewhere in the region of Stormback Range. This range tends to be in deserts and Thunder Griffins rest high up onto the mesa that dot the land.
Properties
This feather can be worn and is usually braided into the hair of the Griffin Riders of the area. Braiding the feathers into the hair this way allows for the riders fall to soften if they fall off their Griffins. It works as an excellent conductor of lightning for Griffins as it takes and discharges the electricity. Therefore the feathers always have a slight electric static component to them.
..As An Alchemy Ingredient
Used primarily in any potion that requires soft falls, levitation and conductivity. Main ingredient in Skyfire Phials, a volatile alchemical charge used by battlesworn alchemists. It ignites in brilliant arcs of white-blue plasma, disabling the attacker. Griffin Feather Down is also the main ingredient in a ritual that bonds a Rider to a Griffin on a soul level.
The ritual is dangerous and not for the faint of heart. Many die trying to achieve what only about 42% can. I was lucky enough to have survived.
Gathering and Preparation Instructions
Typically and ideally, you'll want to gather these from the abandoned nests after the Storm season. You only have a window of about 2-4 weeks to obtain these feathers before the abandoned homes of the Griffins become claimed again. If one does happen to catch you, bow before it and show you mean no harm. Take only what you need. After gathering, keep in a stone lined bronze box for safe keeping. To prepare for potions, it has to lay on cold moonstone for several days, or at least until the innate static electricity within the feather quiets down to an acceptable and handleable state.
I like the note that it can possibly cause levitation. Curious to find out if that's true!
