Known Region
Earthheart Shale can be found in the bowels of Earth Temples. Earth Temples are usually built where leylines intersect and have an overflowing fountain of magic. I've heard that miners think this mineral is alive and "grows" instead of forms. Generally, the Amberpeak mountains have been the only place I've found that has major deposits.
Properties
Powdered Earthheart Shale is perfect for protection spells and wards. When put into potions or spells you have to make sure you grind it in a mortar and pestle, otherwise it will not dissolve.
..As an Alchemy Ingredient
Earthheart Shale is a stabilizer when used as an alchemy ingredient. Due to it's strong connection to the Earth Magicks, it can be used in potions that nullify petrification effects. It can also be used in potions that make ones skin harder as protection.
I've found that if you put some of this into healing potions, it tends to draw out the effects of the potions its in. For example you'd only need to administer slow acting healing potions once every few days instead of every day, thus using less resources.
Gathering and Preparation Instructions
Best practice is to harvest with obsidian tools, it can damage iron. To avoid awakening leyline elementals, harvest under a full moon. A tradition to collecting the Shale is to leave a drop of blood at the site you dig them out of. Wash by moonlight, dry by sunlight. Crush carefully with an obsidian mortar and pestle.
Weirdly, I want to lick it. Useful material. :)
